Anthrax - Biography and discography, all albums and songs

Anthrax

Anthrax is an American metal band and one of the founders and key representatives of the thrash metal genre. The band was formed in 1981 in New York City and, together with Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth, is part of the so-called “Big Four of Thrash Metal.” Anthrax played an important role in shaping the sound and aesthetic of thrash by combining aggressive heavy metal, punk energy, and elements of hardcore. They were also among the first metal bands to experiment with rap culture and alternative influences.

Formation and Early Years (1981–1984)

The band was founded in 1981 by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker in Queens, New York. The name Anthrax was taken from a medical textbook; the musicians liked its sound and the visual association with danger and aggression—characteristics of the early metal underground.

The original lineup included:

  • Scott Ian — rhythm guitar
  • Dan Lilker — bass
  • Neil Turbin — vocals
  • Greg Walls — lead guitar
  • Dave Weiss — drums

The lineup changed several times before the release of the debut album. By 1984, the band had solidified a version of the lineup that included guitarist Dan Spitz and drummer Charlie Benante, who later became key members of Anthrax’s classic era.

In 1984 the band released their debut album “Fistful of Metal”, one of the early releases of the emerging thrash metal movement. The album combined speed and aggression with the traditions of the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal).

The Classic Lineup and Breakthrough (1984–1987)

After the release of the first album, vocalist Neil Turbin left the band. He was replaced by Joey Belladonna, a singer with a powerful and melodic voice who greatly influenced the band’s recognizable sound.

During this period the classic Anthrax lineup was formed:

  • Joey Belladonna — vocals
  • Scott Ian — rhythm guitar
  • Dan Spitz — lead guitar
  • Frank Bello — bass (Charlie Benante’s nephew)
  • Charlie Benante — drums

In 1985 the band released “Spreading the Disease”, which became an important milestone in the development of thrash metal. The album gained wide recognition thanks to its combination of aggressive riffs, melodic vocals, and complex rhythms.

The global breakthrough came in 1987 with the release of “Among the Living”, one of the most influential thrash metal albums ever recorded. The album featured tracks such as:

  • “Caught in a Mosh”
  • “Indians”
  • “I Am the Law” (inspired by the comic character Judge Dredd)

The album went gold and solidified Anthrax’s status as one of the leaders of the genre.

Late-1980s Success (1988–1991)

Toward the end of the decade the band continued a successful run of releases:

  • “State of Euphoria” (1988)
  • “Persistence of Time” (1990)

The latter album featured darker themes and more complex songwriting. It received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Metal Performance.

Anthrax also became known for their sense of humor and pop-culture references. The band frequently used themes from comics, movies, and popular culture, which set them apart from many of their darker contemporaries.

Experiments and Collaboration with Hip-Hop

Anthrax went down in history as one of the first metal bands to experiment with a metal-rap crossover. In 1987 they recorded a cover of “I’m the Man”, which incorporated rap elements.

The most famous collaboration was the track “Bring the Noise” with the hip-hop group Public Enemy, released in 1991. This project became one of the first successful examples of combining rap and metal and had a major influence on the development of rap metal and nu metal.

The John Bush Era (1992–2005)

In 1992 Joey Belladonna left the band and was replaced by John Bush, previously known for his work with Armored Saint.

With Bush, Anthrax released several albums:

  • “Sound of White Noise” (1993)
  • “Stomp 442” (1995)
  • “Volume 8: The Threat Is Real” (1998)
  • “We’ve Come for You All” (2003)

This era was characterized by a more modern sound, influenced by alternative metal and groove metal. Despite fluctuations in commercial success, the band maintained a strong fan base.

Return of the Classic Voice (2010s)

In 2010 Joey Belladonna returned to the band, a move warmly welcomed by fans.

In 2011 Anthrax released “Worship Music”, which received critical acclaim and became one of the band’s most successful releases in years.

In 2016 the band released “For All Kings”, which debuted high on international charts.
