Земфира

Ramazanova Zemfira Talgatovna — a Russian singer, composer, musician, and songwriter, known by her stage name Zemfira. Her name became a symbol of the new wave of Russian rock music of the late 1990s and 2000s. Zemfira’s work is distinguished by depth, sincerity, and raw emotional power. She is an artist who has always followed her own path — combining intellect, inner freedom, and artistic expression.

Early Life

Zemfira was born on August 26, 1976 in Ufa (Bashkortostan, Russia) into an educated family. Her father, Talgat Talgatovich Ramazanov, was a history teacher, and her mother, Florida Khakimovna, was a physician specializing in therapeutic exercise. Zemfira is ethnically Bashkir and often speaks fondly of her native Ufa region. Her older brother tragically died during a spearfishing trip — an event that profoundly influenced her worldview.

From early childhood, Zemfira was surrounded by music. She graduated from music school with a focus on piano, sang in a choir, and made her first TV appearance with a humorous song about a worm. In her school years, she revealed not only artistic talent but also athletic ability — she played basketball competitively and became the captain of the girls’ team, combining sports with musical training.

Education and First Steps in Music

After finishing school, Zemfira entered the Ufa College of Arts, majoring in pop vocals, and graduated with honors. At the same time, she played guitar, wrote songs, and performed covers of her favorite bands — Kino, Akvarium, and Nautilus Pompilius. Later she worked as a sound engineer at the radio station Europa Plus Ufa, recording jingles and commercials. It was there, during breaks between shifts, that she began composing her first original songs using the Cakewalk software.

In the late 1990s, Zemfira recorded a demo tape and, together with musician Vadim Akhmadiev, formed a band. Borrowing money, she traveled to Moscow to present her material to producers. Her songs caught the attention of journalists at the Maxidrom festival — marking the beginning of one of the most iconic careers in modern Russian music.

Breakthrough and Popularity

In 1999, her debut album Zemfira was released and instantly became a sensation. Hits like SPID (AIDS), Romashki (Daisies), Pochemu (Why), Arivederchi, and Sneg (Snow) were played everywhere, and the singer became the voice of a new generation. Her honesty, inner rebellion, and poetic lyrics set her apart from mainstream pop. In 2000, her second album Forgive Me My Love cemented her success.

Subsequent albums — Fourteen Weeks of Silence (2002), Vendetta (2005), and Thank You (2007) — showed her growth as a songwriter. She experimented with sound, blending rock, jazz, electronica, and alternative styles. Each release told its own story, rich in metaphors and emotional nuance.

Later Period and New Albums

In 2013, Zemfira released the conceptual album To Live in Your Head — a mature, philosophical work reflecting her inner world. After that, she took a creative pause, performing selectively and rarely appearing in the media.

In 2021 came the highly anticipated album Borders (Borderline), recorded during the pandemic. It marked Zemfira’s grand return, receiving rave reviews and being named one of the strongest Russian releases of the year. Songs like Austin, Evil Man, Crimea, and SkySeaClouds became anthems of a new artistic chapter.

In 2022, Zemfira embarked on a European tour, performing in Berlin, Prague, Paris, and Tbilisi. Her shows were intimate, emotionally charged, and often described by audiences as “musical confessions.”

Film Projects and Documentaries

Zemfira also works actively in adjacent art forms. In 2013, the documentary Green Theatre in Zemfira was released, directed by Renata Litvinova — her close friend and longtime creative partner. The film offered a behind-the-scenes look at her artistry and is considered one of Russia’s most profound music documentaries.

Zemfira’s music appears in many of Litvinova’s films, including The Goddess: How I Loved, The Last Tale of Rita, and The North Wind. Their collaboration is often cited as a model of artistic synergy between filmmaker and composer.
