Metallica - Biography and discography, all albums and songs

Metallica

Metallica is an American rock band that became the symbol of thrash metal and one of the most influential acts in the history of global music. Founded on October 15, 1981, in Los Angeles, the band made an invaluable contribution to the evolution of hard rock and created a unique sound, combining speed, power, and deep emotional expression. Metallica is more than a band — it is a cultural phenomenon whose albums and concerts have inspired fans for over four decades.

Formation and Early Years

Metallica was formed in 1981 by guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich. Later, bassist Ron McGovney joined them. The musicians drew inspiration from bands such as Motörhead, Diamond Head, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, and Mercyful Fate.

Metallica’s first steps were rooted in the Los Angeles underground scene. In 1982, Lars Ulrich arranged for the track “Hit the Lights” to appear on the compilation Metal Massacre by Metal Blade Records — the band’s recording debut. Soon after, the musicians relocated to San Francisco, where their core sound and loyal fanbase began to form.

Breakthrough: Kill ’Em All and Ride the Lightning

After recording the Megaforce Demo, Metallica signed with Megaforce Records and released their debut album Kill ’Em All in 1983. This record became the manifesto of a new genre — thrash metal — blending punk speed with heavy metal intensity. The album won the band its first devoted fans and established the foundation of their legendary sound.

Their second studio album, Ride the Lightning (1984), marked a more mature direction: introducing symphonic elements, complex arrangements, and lyrics reflecting fate, justice, and life. The album drew the attention of Elektra Records, with whom the band signed a long-term deal.

Master of Puppets and the Tragedy of Cliff Burton

In 1986, Metallica released Master of Puppets — one of the most influential rock albums of all time. Tracks like Battery, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), and the title song Master of Puppets earned widespread critical and fan acclaim. The album was later included in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Tragedy struck later that year: on September 27, 1986, while touring in Sweden, bassist Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident. Despite the devastating loss, the band decided to continue and recruited Jason Newsted as their new bassist.

…And Justice for All and Global Success

In 1988, Metallica released …And Justice for All, an album marked by complex structures and socially conscious themes. The single One became the band’s first music video and earned a Grammy Award. The album was followed by the extensive Damaged Justice tour.

The true breakthrough to mainstream audiences came with Metallica (The Black Album) (1991). Singles like Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, and Sad But True made Metallica the leading rock band of the 1990s. The album topped charts worldwide, achieved multi-platinum status, and remains one of the best-selling rock albums in history.

Load, ReLoad, and New Experiments

After years of touring, the band began exploring new creative directions. In 1996, they released Load, followed by ReLoad in 1997. These albums showcased a more blues-influenced sound. The cover art, designed by Andres Serrano, stirred debate among fans. Despite the controversy, both records achieved commercial success, and songs like Fuel and The Memory Remains became live staples.

In 1998, Metallica released Garage Inc., a collection of covers paying tribute to their inspirations, from Misfits to Bob Seger. Another landmark project followed: S&M (1999), a groundbreaking live performance with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Kamen.

2000s: Crisis, Renewal, and Comeback

In 2001, Jason Newsted left the band. During the recording of their next album, internal tensions emerged — later documented in the film Some Kind of Monster. Metallica eventually recruited Robert Trujillo as their new bassist.

The 2003 release of St. Anger sparked mixed reactions due to its raw, experimental sound, but the title track St. Anger won a Grammy Award.

In 2008, the band returned to their roots with Death Magnetic — a powerful, riff-heavy album filled with long, aggressive tracks. It topped charts in 32 countries and was followed by the global World Magnetic Tour (2008–2010).

New Era: Hardwired… to Self-Destruct and M72 World Tour

In 2016, Metallica released the double album Hardwired… to Self-Destruct, blending classic thrash aggression with melodic ballads. Songs like Hardwired, Atlas, Rise!, and Moth Into Flame reaffirmed Metallica’s position at the forefront of the global rock scene.

In 2023, the band unveiled their 11th studio album, 72 Seasons — a conceptual work reflecting on themes of youth and freedom. The album received widespread critical acclaim, and the accompanying M72 World Tour became one of the most extensive tours in Metallica’s history.

Legacy and Influence

Metallica is not just a band — it is a legend of global rock. Their influence extends across genres from metalcore to alternative rock. Their songs have appeared in films, TV series, and video games, while their concerts continue to fill stadiums around the world.

With over 125 million albums sold worldwide, Metallica is the first metal band to have performed on every continent — including Antarctica. In 2009, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
