Axwell - Biography and discography, all albums and songs

Axwell

Axwell (real name Axel Christofer Hedfors, born 18 December 1977, Lund, Sweden) is a Swedish DJ, producer, remixer and one of the most influential figures on the global house scene. A member of the legendary trio Swedish House Mafia together with Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello, founder of the label Axtone Records, winner of numerous awards and the creator of several iconic progressive house anthems.

Early years and career beginnings

Axel Hedfors was born in the city of Lund and started making music in childhood: first playing drums, then moving on to producing electronic music on a computer. In the late 1990s he released tracks under various aliases in styles such as acid house, tech house, and electro, gradually honing his own signature sound.

By the end of the 1990s he moved to Stockholm, immersed himself in club culture and began collaborating with local DJs, among them Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello — his future partners in Swedish House Mafia.

Axwell’s first vinyl release came out when he was about twenty and quickly caught the attention of the European dance scene.

Breakthrough: 2004–2006

International recognition came to Axwell in 2004 with the release of "Feel The Vibe", which became one of the biggest club tracks of the year and cemented his status as a rising star. The vocal version “Feel The Vibe (’Til The Morning Comes)” entered charts all across Europe.

In 2005 Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso released "Together", which became a major hit and one of the first steps towards what would become SHM.

Around the same time Axwell launched his own label, Axtone Records, which would later grow into one of the most respected imprints in the progressive house world.

The formation of Swedish House Mafia (2006–2008)

From the mid-2000s, Axwell, Angello and Ingrosso worked together on a regular basis, releasing joint tracks and playing at major festivals. One of their key early hits was:

  • "Tell Me Why" (Axwell & Steve Angello as Supermode)

The track became a powerful international success and solidified the creative alliance of the Swedish trio.

In August 2007 they played their first joint live set in Ibiza, which became the starting point for the full-scale supergroup Swedish House Mafia.

Peak years: 2008–2013

In 2008 Axwell received two awards at the Beatport Music Awards:

  • Best House Artist

  • Best Remix

During this period Swedish House Mafia became a global phenomenon, performing at the biggest venues in the world. Their career skyrocketed, and their tracks turned into anthems of the EDM scene:

  • "One (Your Name)"

  • "Miami 2 Ibiza"

  • "Save The World"

  • "Don’t You Worry Child" (a multi-platinum No.1 hit in the UK)

In 2010 Axwell reached 10th place in the DJ Mag Top 100 — his best result to date.

The same year saw the release of the documentary "Take One", dedicated to the story and rise of Swedish House Mafia.

Axwell / Ingrosso and new projects

After Swedish House Mafia’s temporary split in 2013, Axwell and Ingrosso launched the duo Axwell / Ingrosso, releasing a string of high-profile hits:

  • "Sun Is Shining"

  • "More Than You Know"

  • "On My Way"

  • "Something New"

The duo filled arenas, headlined Tomorrowland, Ultra and Coachella, and their sound became a benchmark for modern progressive house.

The return of Swedish House Mafia

In 2018 Swedish House Mafia reunited with a massive performance at Ultra Miami. This appearance became one of the most talked-about events in EDM history.

In 2021–2022 the group officially returned, signing with Republic Records and releasing the album "Paradise Again", which includes tracks such as:

  • "It Gets Better"

  • "Moth To A Flame" (feat. The Weeknd)

  • "Lifetime"
