В это время поэт переживал разрыв с женой Любовью Менделеевой, которая весной 1907 года ушла к его другу Андрею Белому. Несмотря на новые чувства к актрисе Наталье Волоховой, Блок не мог забыть бывшую супругу и продолжал посвящать ей стихи.
