Shawn Mendes, full name Shawn Peter Raul Mendes (born August 8, 1998, Toronto, Canada), is a Canadian singer, songwriter, guitarist and music producer. He became one of the most successful artists whose career began on social media: short covers on Vine led to a contract with Island Records and later to worldwide hits such as Stitches, Treat You Better, Mercy, There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back, In My Blood, If I Can't Have You, Señorita, Wonder and other songs.

Mendes’ first four studio albums — Handwritten, Illuminate, Shawn Mendes and Wonder — all consecutively topped the US Billboard 200. His fifth album, Shawn, marked a noticeable turning point: after several years in which the artist reconsidered his relationship with touring and his own career, the large-scale pop sound gave way to acoustic instruments, folk and Americana.

Shawn Mendes has received three Grammy nominations but has not yet won the award. His nominations are connected with the songs In My Blood and Señorita, as well as the album Shawn Mendes.

Childhood and early musical interests

Shawn Peter Raul Mendes was born on August 8, 1998, in Toronto and grew up in Pickering, Ontario. His father, Manuel Mendes, is of Portuguese descent and comes from the Algarve region; his mother, Karen, has English roots. Shawn has a younger sister named Aaliyah.

As a teenager, Mendes taught himself to play guitar using online lessons and gradually began recording his own performances of popular songs. Music was not yet a professional occupation, but it was during this period that the foundation of his future style took shape — voice, acoustic guitar and songs built around simple, emotionally direct melodies.

Vine and the contract with Island Records

In 2013, Mendes began posting short covers on the social network Vine, where videos lasted only a few seconds. The format proved exceptionally well suited to him: a fragment of a chorus or verse was enough to demonstrate his voice and performance style.

His audience grew rapidly. The young singer attracted the attention of manager Andrew Gertler and later representatives of Island Records. In 2014, Mendes signed with the label and began moving from internet covers to professional recordings of his own repertoire.

Life of the Party and the first EP

His debut official single was Life of the Party, released in summer 2014. The song was written by Ido Zmishlany and Scott Harris.

The track debuted at No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100. At fifteen, Mendes became the youngest artist at the time whose debut single entered the US chart directly inside the Top 25.

In July of the same year, The Shawn Mendes EP was released — the singer’s first release on Island Records. His next major project would show that the success on Vine was not a short-lived internet phenomenon.

Handwritten and the worldwide success of Stitches

The debut studio album Handwritten was released on April 14, 2015 and immediately topped the charts in the United States and Canada. Mendes was 16 at the time.

The album’s sound was built around acoustic guitar, folk-pop and light pop-rock. Its main songs included Life of the Party, Something Big, Never Be Alone, A Little Too Much and Stitches.

It was Stitches that turned Mendes into an international pop star. The song reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, while in the United Kingdom it topped the Official Singles Chart and remained at No. 1 for two weeks.

An element that would remain present throughout much of Mendes’ later work was already evident in his early music: a relatively simple melodic foundation combined with vocals that gradually increase emotional tension toward the chorus.

Taylor Swift and the first collaboration with Camila Cabello

In 2015, Mendes opened for Taylor Swift during the North American leg of The 1989 World Tour. Only a short time earlier, his audience had been watching brief Vine covers; now he was performing in major arenas and stadiums in front of tens of thousands of people.

This period also marked the beginning of his collaboration with Camila Cabello, then a member of Fifth Harmony. Together they wrote I Know What You Did Last Summer. The song appeared on the reissue Handwritten Revisited in November 2015 and became the first major joint hit for the two performers.

Illuminate: a more mature sound

The second studio album Illuminate was released on September 23, 2016 and again debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Compared with Handwritten, the music became more mature. Acoustic guitar remained important, but it was joined by blues, soul and a more noticeable influence from the American singer-songwriter tradition.

One of Mendes’ reference points during this period was John Mayer. This is particularly noticeable in Ruin, with its unhurried guitar foundation and blues inflections.

Treat You Better, Mercy and There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back

Treat You Better was released on June 3, 2016, and reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Mendes’ second US Top 10 hit after Stitches.

Mercy reached No. 15 on the Hot 100. The song begins with a relatively restrained instrumental foundation but gradually develops into a powerful pop-rock climax — an approach that became characteristic of Mendes’ live performances.

In 2017, the expanded edition of Illuminate produced another major hit — There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back. The song reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became his second single to top the US Pop Songs chart.

Before that, Mendes had already completed the Shawn Mendes World Tour in 2016. The following Illuminate World Tour became his first full-scale world tour built mainly around large arenas and covered Europe, North and South America, Australia and Asia.

MTV Unplugged

In 2017, Mendes recorded a performance for MTV Unplugged in Los Angeles. The live album was released on November 3 of the same year.

The format suited the foundation of his music particularly well: even Mendes’ biggest studio hits usually began with guitar or piano. The program also included the combination Use Somebody / Treat You Better, linking a Kings of Leon song with one of the singer’s own biggest hits.

Shawn Mendes: the third album and broader genre range

The third studio album Shawn Mendes was released on May 25, 2018 and became the artist’s third consecutive album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

On this record, his familiar pop-rock sound expanded significantly through R&B, funk, blues and alternative rock. Mendes began using piano, bass lines, electric guitars and more complex studio production much more freely.

The album involved Julia Michaels, Ryan Tedder, Ed Sheeran, Khalid, Teddy Geiger, Scott Harris and other writers. John Mayer played the guitar solo on Like to Be You.

In My Blood and the first Grammy nominations

In My Blood became one of the most important songs in Mendes’ development as a songwriter. Instead of his usual romantic subject matter, the central theme is the internal state of a person trying to cope with anxiety and a sense of emotional pressure.

The song reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and brought Mendes his first Grammy nomination in the Song of the Year category. The album Shawn Mendes was simultaneously nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album.

Lost in Japan showed another side of the album: acoustic pop gave way to piano, funk rhythms and R&B. A dance version with Zedd was later released.

If I Can't Have You and Señorita

In May 2019, Mendes released the standalone single If I Can't Have You. It debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, which at the time became his best result on the US chart.

But the year’s biggest hit was Señorita, recorded with Camila Cabello. The song initially debuted at No. 2 on the Hot 100 before rising to No. 1, becoming Mendes’ first US chart-topper.

In the United Kingdom, Señorita also topped the official singles chart. The song received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

Shawn Mendes: The Tour

In 2019, Mendes launched Shawn Mendes: The Tour — one of the largest touring projects of the first decade of his career. The itinerary included Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

On September 6, Mendes played his first own stadium concert at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. The show sold out within minutes of tickets going on sale.

Despite the scale of the production, Mendes continued to emphasize his roots in the singer-musician tradition: he spent much of the program playing guitar or piano.

Wonder

The fourth studio album Wonder was released on December 4, 2020 and became Mendes’ fourth consecutive album to top the Billboard 200.

If the previous record had expanded his genre range, Wonder primarily increased the scale of the arrangements. The music featured large choral parts, orchestral layers, synthesizers and transitions from intimate passages to almost cinematic climaxes.

The main songs included Wonder, Monster, Higher, Teach Me How to Love, Call My Friends, Song for No One and 305.

For Monster, Mendes teamed up with Justin Bieber. Rather than a standard duet between two pop stars, the song centered on fame and the pressure created when the industry first idealizes a young artist and then demands that he continue to live up to that image.

Monster entered the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.

In Wonder documentary

In November 2020, Netflix released the documentary Shawn Mendes: In Wonder. Filmed during touring, it showed both the concert side of his career and the strain associated with constant performances, travel and working under the conditions of global fame.

Around the same period, the concert film Shawn Mendes: Live in Concert was released, filmed during a performance in his hometown of Toronto.

It'll Be Okay, When You're Gone and the cancellation of the world tour

After Wonder, Mendes spent some time releasing standalone songs. At the end of 2021 came the piano ballad It'll Be Okay, followed in spring 2022 by the more rhythmic pop-rock song When You're Gone.

The Wonder: The World Tour began on June 27, 2022. However, after the first shows Mendes initially announced a pause, and on July 27 he cancelled the remaining dates. The singer explained that after a long break he was not prepared for the demands of constant travel and decided to put his own health first.

The cancellation became a turning point. Instead of quickly returning to the standard “album — world tour — next album” cycle, Mendes significantly reduced his public activity and gradually changed his relationship with his own music career.

WHAT THE HELL ARE WE DYING FOR?

On June 9, 2023, Mendes unexpectedly released WHAT THE HELL ARE WE DYING FOR?, written with Mike Sabath, Eddie Benjamin and Scott Harris.

The cover used an image of New York covered in smoke from massive wildfires in Canada. The song appeared almost immediately after being created and did not become the beginning of a traditional album campaign.

Return and the album Shawn

In 2024, Mendes began gradually returning to regular performances. Instead of immediately launching a major arena tour, he organized the intimate concert series For Friends and Family Only, during which he performed the new album in full.

His performance at Rock in Rio in September 2024 became a symbolic return to the major festival stage.

The fifth studio album Shawn was released on November 15, 2024. The record was created over about two years in different locations — from Costa Rica and Washington State to Nashville and New York’s Electric Lady Studios.

The main co-writers and co-producers were Scott Harris, Mike Sabath, Nate Mercereau and Eddie Benjamin. Chris Thile of Punch Brothers also participated in the recording.

Musically, Shawn differs sharply from Mendes’ most commercial period. The foreground is occupied by:

• folk;
• Americana;
• live ensemble vocals;
• a more natural instrumental sound.

Instead of attempting to make another large-scale pop record, Mendes focused on a more intimate performance style and lyrics about growing older, loss, self-definition and changes in his own life.

Why Why Why, Heart of Gold and The Mountain

Why Why Why and Isn't That Enough were introduced in August 2024. The first of them made the new direction particularly clear: instead of a large pop chorus, acoustic instruments, folk textures and a much freer vocal style dominate.

Heart of Gold was written in memory of a childhood friend who had died. The song considers loss not only through grief but also through preserving the memory of a person. During a concert in Brooklyn on October 18, 2024, Mendes also dedicated it to the memory of Liam Payne.

In The Mountain, the theme of self-definition moves even closer to the center. The song became one of the clearest examples of how far the music of Shawn had moved away from the radio-oriented pop-rock of the previous decade.

Commercial performance of Shawn

Shawn did not repeat the results of Mendes’ four previous studio albums. In the United States, the record debuted at No. 26 on the Billboard 200, while in Canada it entered at No. 24.

At the same time, the album reached No. 2 on Billboard Americana/Folk Albums, taking Mendes to such a high position on that genre chart for the first time.

The contrast clearly reflects the change in musical direction: Shawn is much less oriented toward the traditional mainstream pop model than Handwritten, Illuminate or Wonder.

For Friends and Family Only

Alongside the album came the film Shawn Mendes: For Friends and Family Only (A Live Concert Film), filmed at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock.

In the film, Mendes performs Shawn in full in a small venue together with musicians. The format closely matches the concept of the album itself — a return to live interaction between voices and instruments instead of a large-scale concert production.

On the Road Again

In 2025, Mendes returned to large-scale touring with the On the Road Again program.

The tour simultaneously served as a career retrospective and was connected with the tenth anniversary of his debut album Handwritten. The setlist included both early hits and material from Shawn.

The route included European festivals and arenas, followed by major concerts in North America. The final performance took place on October 17, 2025, at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

The tenth anniversary of Illuminate and new live versions

The next stage saw Mendes revisit material from Illuminate as part of his own musical history.

In June 2026, for the tenth anniversary of Treat You Better, the previously unreleased live version Treat You Better (Live From New York) was released. By that time, the original song had received a seven-times platinum RIAA certification and was approaching five billion streams according to Universal Music.

In July came Ruin (Live From Boston), and in August the anniversary series was joined by Mercy (Live From Montreal). The Mercy performance itself had been recorded during the On the Road Again concert in Montreal and had previously appeared as an official live video.

This series does not replace the original Illuminate recordings, but shows how the material from the second album sounds a decade later — with a different voice, a freer live performance style and significantly greater stage experience.

Musical style

Shawn Mendes’ music developed gradually rather than through constant abrupt genre shifts.

Handwritten was based on acoustic guitar, folk-pop and teenage pop-rock. Illuminate added blues and the influence of the singer-songwriter tradition. On Shawn Mendes, funk and R&B became more prominent, while Wonder expanded the music through orchestral, choral and electronic layers.

Shawn moved in the opposite direction: much of the large-scale studio construction disappeared, and voice, guitar and live ensemble once again became central.

Despite all the changes, several elements remain constant: clear melodies, a guitar-based foundation, emotionally intense vocals and lyrics that Mendes usually performs from a first-person perspective.

Shawn Mendes as a songwriter

The origins of his career in the world of internet covers sometimes overshadow an important part of his professional biography: throughout most of his career, Mendes has consistently participated in writing his own material.

Among his most important regular co-writers have been Scott Harris, Teddy Geiger and Geoff Warburton. At different times, he has also worked with Ryan Tedder, Julia Michaels, Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, Nate Mercereau, Mike Sabath, Eddie Benjamin and other songwriters and producers.

His first single, Life of the Party, was written for him by other writers, but on subsequent albums Mendes became directly involved in creating most of his repertoire. On Shawn, he served not only as a co-writer but also as one of the project’s main co-producers.

Shawn Mendes Foundation

In August 2019, the musician founded the Shawn Mendes Foundation.

The foundation supports young people and organizations working in education, healthcare, human rights, environmental issues and other social initiatives. By the time of its launch, more than one million dollars had already been raised through partnerships and donations.

One of its later programs was the Wonder Grants — grants for young activists and project creators working in art, education, science, technology, environmental issues and human rights.

Shawn Mendes’ place in contemporary pop music

Shawn Mendes’ connection with Vine remains an important part of his story because short videos gave him his first mass audience. However, his later career was built on more traditional foundations of the music industry: original repertoire, studio albums, live performances and continuous development of his songwriting language.

Stitches became his first international breakthrough. Illuminate established his recognizable guitar-driven pop-rock sound. In My Blood expanded his lyrical themes beyond romantic relationships, while Señorita became the biggest US hit of his commercial period. Wonder took the scale of production to its maximum, after which Shawn made an almost opposite move — toward acoustic music and a more intimate performance style.
