OneRepublic - Biography and discography, all albums and songs

OneRepublic

OneRepublic — an American pop rock band formed in 2002 in Colorado Springs and later based in Los Angeles. The band has become one of the clearest examples of how persistence, internet support and the right production decisions can turn an almost disbanded project into a global act. OneRepublic blend elements of pop rock, alternative rock, orchestral music and emotive lyrics. The main creative core of the band is vocalist, songwriter and producer Ryan Tedder.

Early years and formation of the band (2002–2004)

The story of OneRepublic began when Ryan Tedder, left in Los Angeles with almost no money, decided not to abandon his dream of becoming a musician. To make his first real step, he sold his own car to buy a minimal studio setup.

For the next two years, Tedder drifted between budget studios and temporary jobs, recording demos, taking on songwriting work for hire and teaching himself music production.

During this period, the band itself gradually came together. It included:

  • Ryan Tedder — vocals, keyboards, guitar

  • Zach Filkins — guitar (Tedder’s school friend and co-founder of the band)

  • Eddie Fisher — drums

  • Drew Brown — guitar

  • Tim Myers — bass guitar, keyboards

At first the line-up changed constantly, but the creative core that took shape between 2002 and 2004 defined the band’s future sound.

Early success and work with Columbia Records (2004–2006)

OneRepublic actively performed at music festivals and in Los Angeles nightclubs and quickly built a local following. This led to a record deal with Columbia Records, where the band began working on their debut album.

At that time, Tedder showed incredible work ethic:
he not only wrote material for OneRepublic, but also worked as a songwriter and producer for other artists, including Timbaland, one of the leading producers of that era.

However, the collaboration with Columbia Records was short-lived. The contract was terminated at the last moment — the album was almost finished, and the band suddenly found themselves without a label, without money and without stability. The members were on the verge of breaking up; at times they literally didn’t have enough money for food.

Internet breakthrough and the «Apologize» phenomenon (2006–2007)

Out of sheer desperation, the band started to post their songs online — a move considered risky at the time. But it became the turning point.

Within a year, their tracks had spread across music platforms and gone viral, and the song «Apologize» gained huge popularity even before its official release. The musicians received messages from listeners all over the world — one of them came from a teenager who confessed that the song had saved his life.

This moment became symbolic: the guys realized that their music already belonged to the people.

Timbaland soon heard about the band’s success. Seeing their potential, he included a remix of «Apologize» on his compilation album «Timbaland Presents Shock Value». The song became an international hit, and the world heard OneRepublic on a truly global scale for the first time.

Debut album «Dreaming Out Loud» (2007)

At the end of 2007, their debut album Dreaming Out Loud was released. Much of the material had been written back in the Columbia Records days. The album’s lyrics reflected:

  • the desire to succeed,

  • doubt and uncertainty,

  • searching for one’s own path,

  • the feeling of «why aren’t we where we’re supposed to be yet?»

The musicians admitted that they themselves didn’t fully understand how they had suddenly ended up on top — everything happened so fast.

After the album’s release, the line-up changed:

  • Eddie Fisher replaced Jerrod Bettis on drums;

  • Brent Kutzle replaced Tim Myers on bass and brought a new dimension to the band’s sound with his cello playing.

Kutzle became a real discovery: his orchestral parts gave OneRepublic their signature emotional depth.

Creative philosophy and signature sound

OneRepublic are a band that loves to experiment:

  • on stage, the musicians often switch instruments during the show;

  • every song sounds different live thanks to improvisation;

  • Tedder always strives for a sound that gives him «goosebumps».

He is convinced that:

if the writer doesn’t feel the music, the listener won’t feel it either.

This mindset became the foundation of OneRepublic’s success in the studio and on stage.

The album «Waking Up» and worldwide recognition (2009)

The band’s second album, Waking Up, was released in 2009. It was recorded all over the world — in Hamburg, Milan, Denver, Tokyo and South America. Tedder believed that creativity shouldn’t be tied to one place.

The album included such hits as:

  • «All the Right Moves»

  • «Secrets»

  • «Marchin On»

OneRepublic’s songs began appearing in films and TV shows, including:

  • «The Sorcerer’s Apprentice»

  • «The Beauty 2» (local release title)

  • «Easy A»

The band’s music became softer, deeper and more cinematic.

OneRepublic in the 2010s and 2020s

In the following years, OneRepublic released several successful albums:

Native (2013)

Featuring the hit «Counting Stars», which became one of the most popular songs of the decade.

Oh My My (2016)

An album rich in experimentation and international collaborations.

Human (2021)

OneRepublic began touring actively on all continents, recording soundtracks for films, taking part in TV shows and engaging in charity projects. Ryan Tedder cemented his status as one of the world’s most in-demand producers, working with Adele, Beyoncé, Paul McCartney, U2, Jonas Brothers, Maroon 5 and dozens of other artists.

Current era

Today, OneRepublic are a global band with a multi-million fanbase. They perform at major festivals, release new singles, continue to experiment with styles and help shape the sound of modern pop rock.

Ryan Tedder remains the band’s main creative driving force, while OneRepublic continue to fuse pop, alternative, acoustic balladry and big arrangements into one cohesive sound.

OneRepublic have come a long way — from a band on the verge of disappearing due to lack of money to a worldwide act whose music is heard on every continent and touches listeners’ hearts. Their story is an example of how belief in a dream, hard work and a sincere attitude to music can change a destiny. Today, OneRepublic remain one of the leading pop rock bands of the 21st century, continuing to inspire people with their honesty and their songs.
