MEDUZA is an Italian electronic trio formed by producers Luca De Gregorio, Mattia Vitale, and Simone Giani. The project was established in Milan and gained worldwide recognition in 2019 following the release of its debut single Piece of Your Heart, recorded with the British duo Goodboys.

MEDUZA occupy a distinctive position in contemporary dance music. On the one hand, they create vocal tracks designed for radio, streaming platforms, and major festivals. On the other, they maintain a close connection with club house, releasing longer and more rhythmically intensive tracks through their own label, AETERNA Records.

Their music combines house, deep house, tech house, melodic house, progressive house, and dance-pop. MEDUZA’s recognizable sound is built around a driving bassline, spacious synthesizers, short vocal phrases, and a melancholic emotional quality that remains present even in their most energetic compositions.

Members of MEDUZA

The project consists of:

• Luca De Gregorio — producer, composer, and musician;
• Mattia Vitale — producer and DJ;
• Simone Giani — producer, musician, and DJ.

Before MEDUZA was formed, all three had already spent many years working in the music industry. Luca released material under the name Luke Degree, Mattia used the alias Mattia Mavi, and Simone was a member of the project Blue Venice. They created music, worked as engineers and songwriters, performed in clubs, and collaborated with other artists, but remained primarily known to industry professionals rather than the general public.

Simone Giani received a classical music education and worked as a piano teacher. One of the members’ shared influences was the French house sound of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Mattia also cited Solomun, Luca named Giorgio Moroder and Benny Benassi, while Simone highlighted The Chemical Brothers, classical music, and 1990s hip-hop.

Formation of the Project

All three lived in Milan, visited the same clubs, worked within overlapping studio circles, and gradually began creating music together. Their first joint sessions did not produce immediate results, but the participants felt that their different professional skills could complement one another.

In 2018, the producers found themselves in a London studio, where they were preparing demo recordings for other dance projects. Most of their ideas failed to attract interest from industry representatives. Among the material was an unfinished composition that the musicians initially did not want to present because they felt the production was not developed enough.

That demo eventually became the foundation of Piece of Your Heart. Following a positive response from management, the trio decided to complete the track and release it independently under a new shared name.

The name MEDUZA was intended to sound distinctly Italian and resemble an international fashion brand. In its graphic construction, the members also saw references to their own names: M for Mattia, D for De Gregorio, and S, reflected in the spelling as Z, for Simone. The connection with the mythological Medusa Gorgon was not the primary reason for choosing the name.

Piece of Your Heart

The debut single Piece of Your Heart was released on February 1, 2019. The recording featured the British musicians Goodboys, with whom MEDUZA had worked during the London studio sessions.

The composition is built around several simple but easily recognizable elements: a vocal line, a hummed motif, a deep bass part, and the accidentally preserved spoken phrase “Wait, sorry, just quickly…”. These details transformed a minimalist house track into a complete pop composition without removing its club foundation.

Piece of Your Heart reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and remained on the British chart for 39 weeks. It stayed on the UK Dance Singles Chart for 116 weeks, including 14 weeks at number one.

The success extended far beyond the United Kingdom: the composition entered charts across Europe, Australia, and North America, received numerous certifications, and transformed a previously unknown project into one of the leading dance-music breakthroughs of 2019.

Grammy

In November 2019, Piece of Your Heart was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Dance Recording category, which was later renamed Best Dance/Electronic Recording.

The nomination was specifically for an individual recording, not an album. MEDUZA and Goodboys did not win the award: the prize went to Got to Keep On by The Chemical Brothers.

Lose Control

In October 2019, MEDUZA continued their collaboration with Goodboys and invited British singer Becky Hill to record Lose Control.

The producers faced a difficult task: proving that the success of their debut single had not been accidental. For that reason, Lose Control did not directly repeat Piece of Your Heart, although it retained its most important qualities — deep bass, emotional vocals, and a compact pop structure.

The composition reached number eleven on the main UK chart and remained there for 29 weeks. On the UK Dance Singles Chart, it climbed to number two and stayed on the chart for 68 weeks.

The success of two consecutive singles established MEDUZA as an independent project capable of combining club house with an international radio format.

The Pandemic and Paradise

MEDUZA’s rapid touring growth came to a halt in early 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The cancellation of performances created an unexpected problem: the members were accustomed to testing new compositions in clubs and evaluating audience reactions before an official release.

The trio initially prepared another single, but abandoned it after a weak response during one of their first post-lockdown performances. The musicians then returned to the idea of working with Irish singer Dermot Kennedy, whose song Power Over Me they had previously remixed.

The result was Paradise, released in October 2020. The track combined Dermot Kennedy’s raspy vocals with melancholic chords and MEDUZA’s characteristic bassline.

Paradise reached number five on the UK Singles Chart and topped the Irish chart for three weeks. It became the trio’s third major international hit and confirmed that their musical formula could work with vocalists far beyond the club scene.

Introducing MEDUZA

In February 2021, the EP Introducing MEDUZA was released, bringing together the project’s first major singles and part of its additional material.

The title accurately reflected the release’s purpose: by that point, MEDUZA already had several international hits, but had not yet presented a complete album concept. The EP consolidated the early model of their sound — vocal house with concise arrangements, expressive bass, and a song-based structure.

The trio later continued to develop their discography mainly through individual singles, collaborations, and club versions rather than through a traditional cycle of full-length albums.

Tell It to My Heart

In 2021, MEDUZA recorded Tell It to My Heart with Irish singer-songwriter Hozier.

The choice of vocalist demonstrated the trio’s desire to work with artists beyond the typical world of dance-pop. Hozier’s voice, associated with soul, blues, and alternative rock, gave the composition a more dramatic character.

The single achieved a more modest result on the UK chart than the group’s first hits, but became an important example of MEDUZA’s production approach: the members prefer to adapt their own style to the personality of a guest vocalist rather than simply place any voice over the same club foundation.

The Club Side of the Project

MEDUZA’s radio singles are often classified as dance-pop and deep house, but the trio’s live programs differ noticeably from their commercial recordings.

The project’s DJ sets are based on house, tech house, acid house, melodic house, and progressive house. They contain fewer song-oriented compositions and considerably more extended instrumental tracks designed for club mixing.

For a significant part of the project’s career, most performances under the MEDUZA name were played by Mattia Vitale. Simone Giani later began performing DJ sets more frequently as well. Luca De Gregorio is more focused on the studio and musical side of the project.

Therefore, the presence of only one member behind the DJ booth does not mean that the group has split up or reduced its lineup. MEDUZA remain a production trio but use different live formats depending on the venue.

Under Pressure, Bad Memories, and Other Releases

After the club industry resumed activity, MEDUZA significantly expanded their range of collaborations.

Together with Brazilian producer Vintage Culture and vocalist Ben Samama, they released Under Pressure. The collaboration with Eli & Fur produced Pegasus, while the more club-oriented Just a Feeling was created with Matador and Artche. These releases emphasized the side of MEDUZA aimed not at daytime radio but at the dancefloor.

One of the biggest vocal singles of the period was Bad Memories, created with British producer James Carter and featuring Elley Duhé and FAST BOY. The composition continued the project’s characteristic style of emotionally tense pop-house and entered the dance charts of several countries.

Other important vocal collaborators during this period included Hozier, Elley Duhé, FAST BOY, Sam Tompkins, and Em Beihold.

Phone and the Self-Titled MEDUZA Release

In 2023, the trio released Phone, featuring vocals by Sam Tompkins and Em Beihold. The song continued the project’s vocal direction but introduced a more pronounced pop narrative and a dialogue between the two performers.

In October of the same year, the expanded self-titled release MEDUZA appeared. It included the already established hits Piece of Your Heart, Lose Control, Paradise, Tell It to My Heart, and Bad Memories, together with more recent material.

The release is more accurately described as a major compilation project or an expanded EP summarizing the first years of the trio’s career, rather than a completely new conceptual studio album. It reached number 19 on the UK Dance Albums Chart.

AETERNA Records

In 2023, MEDUZA launched their own label, AETERNA Records.

Its purpose differs from the trio’s main radio-oriented discography. AETERNA focuses on club music, longer versions of compositions, experiments with house, and support for producers whom the members encounter during touring and studio work.

The label became a way to separate commercial vocal singles from deeper dancefloor material without creating an artificial conflict between the two sides of MEDUZA. Its catalog includes the trio’s own club-focused work, as well as releases by GENESI and other contemporary house producers.

This approach reflects MEDUZA’s central idea: mainstream success and a connection to club culture do not necessarily exclude one another.

ODIZZEA

In 2022, MEDUZA introduced the live concept ODIZZEA, which made it possible to regularly bring all three members onto the stage for the first time.

Unlike a standard DJ performance, the program included live control of synthesizer parts, pads, rhythm, and visual elements. Mattia worked with the mixer, CDJs, and drum pads, while Luca and Simone handled the melodic and instrumental layers.

The visual component told the story of a mechanical creature transforming into a human, turning the set into a sequential audiovisual narrative. The project presented MEDUZA’s studio-based nature more fully than a performance featuring only one member behind the DJ booth.

OUR HOUSE

Another important direction was the OUR HOUSE brand, created by MEDUZA together with British DJ and producer James Hype.

The project was conceived as a space between the commercial festival scene and club house. OUR HOUSE programs feature deep house, tech house, progressive house, melodic house, and more direct festival-oriented material.

Following individual shows and residencies, OUR HOUSE received a full season at Hï Ibiza. In 2026, MEDUZA and James Hype returned to the club for the fourth time, taking over the Theatre on Wednesdays from late May until late September.

MEDUZA³

The modern version of the trio’s full live performance became the MEDUZA³ format.

In this configuration, Luca De Gregorio, Mattia Vitale, and Simone Giani are all onstage simultaneously, combining DJing, live piano, MIDI controllers, and digital instruments. This allows them to alter arrangements directly during the performance rather than simply play pre-prepared versions of their compositions.

During the OUR HOUSE 2026 season, MEDUZA³ became the group’s main performance format at Hï Ibiza. Individual tour dates, however, may still take place in the traditional DJ format with one member.

Fire — the Official UEFA EURO 2024 Anthem

In May 2024, MEDUZA released Fire together with the American band OneRepublic and German singer Leony.

The song became the official music anthem of the UEFA EURO 2024 football championship. It was written by OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder together with co-writers, while MEDUZA were responsible for the production.

Fire combined OneRepublic’s large-scale pop-rock sound, Leony’s vocals, and the Italian trio’s festival house production. The composition was performed as part of the tournament’s official program and became one of MEDUZA’s most visible international projects outside the club industry.

Releases of 2026

In March 2026, MEDUZA released Don’t Wanna Go Home featuring Henry Camamile. The composition is dedicated to the closing moment of a club night, when the set is supposed to end but neither the crowd nor the artist is ready to leave.

In May, a new version of La La Land appeared, created with Green Velvet, GENESI, and ESSENTIA. The track reinterpreted one of the classic vocal themes of Chicago house through contemporary club production.

In June, MEDUZA presented Silence with Dutch singer RANI, followed in July by Weekend with American R&B artist Khalid. The latter continued the direction in which MEDUZA’s dance foundation is combined with vocalists who are not limited to the traditional EDM scene.

These works demonstrate two parallel sides of the modern project: the club-oriented side represented by La La Land, and the vocal, song-based direction developed in Don’t Wanna Go Home, Silence, and Weekend.

DJ Mag Top 100 DJs

In 2024, MEDUZA entered the main DJ Mag Top 100 DJs ranking for the first time, placing 100th. In 2025, the trio rose to number 92.

The publication described their style as pop-flavoured house and named Piece of Your Heart, Lose Control, Paradise, Bad Memories, and Tell It to My Heart among their best-known works.

The ranking is based on an open audience vote and primarily reflects international popularity and touring recognition. It is not a direct assessment of compositional or technical skill.

Musical Style

MEDUZA work within house music but use different forms of it depending on the purpose.

Radio singles are generally built around:

• compact running times;
• a prominent vocal performance;
• a deep but not overloaded bassline;
• a recurring melodic hook;
• a combination of melancholy and dance energy.

Club compositions and sets more often use:

• tech house and progressive house;
• longer introductions and transitions;
• acid elements;
• instrumental sections without vocals;
• gradual control of dancefloor dynamics.

The term deep house is appropriate for part of MEDUZA’s early sound, but does not describe their entire catalog. Their work also includes melodic house, progressive house, tech house, dance-pop, and selected techno elements.

Production Approach

MEDUZA do not follow a single unchanging formula when creating a track. The process may begin with a bassline, a piano chord, a rhythm, a vocal idea, an old recording, or even a scene from a film.

The main internal filter is agreement among all three members. Differences in their tastes lead to constant debate and revision, but also help them avoid decisions that satisfy only one person.

This collective approach distinguishes MEDUZA from a project in which one producer creates the music while the others perform only stage or organizational functions. All three participate in shaping the musical material, although their roles during touring may differ.

Significance

MEDUZA became one of the few Italian electronic projects to establish themselves simultaneously on pop radio, in international charts, and within contemporary club culture.

Their success began with Piece of Your Heart, but did not end with a single hit. Lose Control proved the durability of their musical formula, Paradise expanded their emotional range, Tell It to My Heart demonstrated their willingness to work with vocalists who were unusual for EDM, and AETERNA Records returned attention to the project’s dancefloor foundation.

The development of ODIZZEA, OUR HOUSE, and MEDUZA³ allowed the trio to move beyond the format of a conventional production collective. Today, MEDUZA operate in several forms at once: as creators of international vocal hits, a club house project, label owners, and a complete live electronic trio.
