Ferry Corsten — is a Dutch DJ, music producer and composer from Rotterdam, and one of the key figures of the European trance scene of the late 1990s and 2000s. In addition to releases under his own name, he is known for projects and aliases including System F, Gouryella, Moonman, Albion and FERR, as well as the collaborative projects Veracocha and New World Punx.
Ferry Corsten was born on 4 December 1973 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. His early work appeared before the international rise of trance music, while tracks such as Out of the Blue, Gouryella, Walhalla, Punk and Rock Your Body Rock became important parts of both his discography and the club culture of their time.
Early years
Corsten developed an interest in electronic music as a teenager. He listened to Dutch radio programmes, collected records and taught himself how to make music. To buy his first synthesiser, the future producer earned money by washing cars and selling his own mixtapes.
Contrary to a frequently repeated version of his biography, Corsten’s professional DJ career did not begin in the late 1980s. In interviews, he has clarified that from around the age of 15 he was primarily focused on music production, while regular professional DJ performances came much later — after his studio work had begun to attract attention.
In 1991, Corsten released techno material under the name Spirit of Adventure together with John Matze, René de Ruyter and Robert Smit. During the first half of the 1990s, he experimented with techno, acid, hardcore and house under various aliases.
In 1995, the project Hole in One, which included Corsten, won the dance category of the Dutch competition De Grote Prijs van Nederland. A year later, Don't Be Afraid, released under the alias Moonman, entered the UK Singles Chart.
System F and Out of the Blue
The late 1990s proved decisive for Ferry Corsten’s international career.
In 1999, under the alias System F, he released Out of the Blue. The track entered the UK Top 20 and became one of the recordings associated with the rise of melodic Dutch trance during that period.
The next notable System F single was Cry, released in 2000.
It is important, however, to distinguish between the single and the album of the same name: the track Out of the Blue appeared in 1999, while System F’s debut full-length album Out of the Blue was released in 2001. The album also included Cry, the Armin van Buuren collaboration Exhale and Soul on Soul featuring Marc Almond.
In 2003, System F followed with a second album, Together.
Gouryella and collaboration with Tiësto
Another major part of Corsten’s career was Gouryella, a project originally created together with Tiësto.
The first single, Gouryella, appeared in 1999. It was followed the same year by Walhalla featuring vocals by Rachel Spier. In 2000, the project released Tenshi.
After Tiësto stopped participating, Ferry Corsten retained Gouryella as his own project. In 2002, Ligaya was released under the name, created by Corsten with composer John Ewbank.
After a long hiatus, Gouryella returned in 2015 with Anahera. Corsten explained that the character of the new melody naturally reminded him of Gouryella’s classic sound.
Anahera was voted Tune of the Year 2015 by listeners of A State of Trance. In the following years, Corsten continued releasing music and performing under the Gouryella name.
Ferry Corsten under his own name
In the early 2000s, Corsten began releasing more music under his own name.
One of the first major releases of this period was Punk. In 2002, the track reached number 29 on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the UK Dance Singles Chart.
In 2003, Ferry Corsten released his debut studio album under his own name, Right of Way. It included Punk, Right of Way and Rock Your Body Rock. The latter became one of his most successful solo singles and reached number 11 on the UK Singles Chart in 2004.
L.E.F. and a broader sound
In 2005, Ferry Corsten founded his own label, Flashover Recordings, which became the main platform for a significant part of his subsequent releases.
In 2006, he released the album L.E.F.. During this period, Corsten noticeably broadened the stylistic range of his work: alongside trance, his productions incorporated electro, house and more song-oriented forms of electronic music.
Guests on the album included Guru of Gang Starr, Howard Jones and Duran Duran vocalist Simon Le Bon.
The single Fire featuring Simon Le Bon reached number 40 on the main UK chart and also entered the Top 10 of the UK Dance Singles Chart.
Twice in a Blue Moon and WKND
The next studio album, Twice in a Blue Moon, was released in 2008. It continued Corsten’s combination of trance with a broader electronic production style.
In 2012, Corsten released WKND. The album included collaborations and vocal tracks with Aruna, Betsie Larkin and Armin van Buuren.
In the early 2010s, Corsten also actively experimented with collaborative projects. In 2013, he and Markus Schulz formed the duo New World Punx, which debuted with the track Romper.
Blueprint
In 2017, Ferry Corsten presented Blueprint — a concept album that combined electronic music with a science-fiction narrative.
The project became one of the most unusual full-length releases in his discography: the tracks were linked by a shared storyline, while the music combined trance, progressive and cinematic elements.
FERR and As Above So Below
In 2020, Corsten returned to the alias FERR, using it for material that differed significantly from festival-oriented trance.
The album As Above So Below was released on 27 March 2020. Instead of a conventional club structure, Corsten explored ambient, cinematic and experimental electronic music. He explained the project as a desire to create calmer, more personal music outside the expectations associated with his DJ career.
Connect
On 22 November 2024, Ferry Corsten released his sixth studio album under his own name, Connect.
The album contains 15 tracks, including collaborations with Marsh, SUPERSTRINGS, Tom Westy, Silva City and 22Bullets. It combines trance, progressive, house and techno and was conceived as a reflection of different stages of Corsten’s production career.
In 2025, an expanded edition, Connect (Deluxe), was released with additional tracks.

Corsten's Countdown and Resonation
On 4 July 2007, Ferry Corsten launched the weekly radio show Corsten's Countdown. One of its defining features was an interactive voting system: listeners voted for their favourite tracks, and the three most popular recordings were then included in the final ranking of the following episode.
In November 2020, after 700 episodes, Corsten ended Corsten's Countdown and launched a new programme, Resonation. Therefore, the frequently repeated claim that the show was renamed in 2021 is incorrect.
Resonation Radio continues to air in 2026, covering trance, progressive and other forms of contemporary electronic music.
Remixes and collaborations
In addition to his own discography, Ferry Corsten is known for a large number of remixes and collaborative productions.
Over the years, he has created remixes for U2, Moby, Duran Duran, The Killers, Snow Patrol and other artists. Within the trance scene, his discography is connected with Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, Above & Beyond, Markus Schulz and many other producers.
One of his landmark early remix projects was his version of William Orbit’s Barber's Adagio for Strings, for which Corsten received a Dancestar award for Best Remix.
Musical style
Trance remains the foundation of Ferry Corsten’s work, although his discography extends far beyond a single genre.
His productions from the late 1990s and early 2000s — particularly System F and Gouryella — are built around clearly defined melodic themes, synthesiser arpeggios and emotional climaxes characteristic of Dutch trance from that period.
Later, Corsten incorporated elements of progressive house, electro, techno and melodic house into his productions, while the FERR project allowed him to develop ambient and cinematic music separately. His official biography now describes his contemporary sound as a combination of trance, melodic house and techno.
Recognition
At the height of his popularity, Ferry Corsten spent several years among the highest-ranked artists in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs. In both 2004 and 2005, he ranked number 5.
He has performed at major international festivals including Tomorrowland, Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, Creamfields and UNTOLD.
In 2022, Ferry Corsten was appointed an Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau, a Dutch state honour, in recognition of his contribution to music and culture.
