Crazy Frog is a virtual music character and electronic project that achieved international fame in the mid-2000s. Its story began with an audio recording by Swedish performer Daniel Malmedahl, who imitated the sound of a two-stroke engine, while the familiar visual design was created by 3D animator Erik Wernquist. The character was originally called The Annoying Thing, but after being used in mobile ringtone advertising by Jamba/Jamster, it received the name Crazy Frog. The project’s biggest musical hit became the 2005 electronic version of «Axel F», Harold Faltermeyer’s composition from the film «Beverly Hills Cop».
The origin of the Crazy Frog sound
Crazy Frog’s characteristic voice appeared before the character itself. In 1997, Daniel Malmedahl recorded a vocal imitation of a two-stroke engine. The audio file began circulating online and was used in various humorous videos and animations.
In 2003, Erik Wernquist created a 3D animation synchronising the character’s movements with Malmedahl’s recording. The resulting figure, wearing a helmet and goggles and pretending to ride an imaginary motorcycle, was initially called The Annoying Thing.
From The Annoying Thing to Crazy Frog
The next stage was connected with the German company Jamba, known in some markets under the brand Jamster. The company licensed the character and sound for the sale of mobile ringtones. It was during this advertising campaign that The Annoying Thing received its new name — Crazy Frog.
The ringtone was heavily advertised on television at a time when downloading melodies, wallpapers and images for mobile phones was a separate segment of the digital market. Crazy Frog quickly became recognisable beyond mobile advertising, after which the character was developed into a music project with its own releases.
«Axel F»
In May 2005, the single «Axel F» was released. It was based on the instrumental composition of the same name by German composer Harold Faltermeyer, originally written for the 1984 film «Beverly Hills Cop». In the Crazy Frog version, the original synthesiser theme was reworked into a dance arrangement and supplemented with Daniel Malmedahl’s vocal sounds.
«Axel F» became an international hit. In the United Kingdom, the single reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and remained at the top for four consecutive weeks. In total, the track spent seventeen weeks in the UK Top 100 and ranked third on the year-end singles chart for 2005.
The success of «Axel F» definitively transformed Crazy Frog from an advertising character into a full music project. The single was followed by a full-length album, new music videos and electronic versions of other well-known compositions.
Crazy Hits
In 2005, the debut album «Crazy Hits» was released. In addition to «Axel F», it included «Popcorn», «Pump Up the Jam», «Who Let the Frog Out», «We Like to Party», «The Pink Panther» and other recordings.
Much of Crazy Frog’s repertoire was based on reworking recognisable melodies. One of the most notable follow-ups was «Popcorn», a new version of the electronic composition by Gershon Kingsley. The single reached number 12 on the UK chart.
At the end of 2005, Crazy Frog released «Jingle Bells / U Can't Touch This». The release reached number five on the UK Singles Chart and became the project’s second UK Top 10 hit after «Axel F».
More Crazy Hits
In 2006, the second studio album «More Crazy Hits» was released. Different countries received editions with varying tracklists, but the core of the album consisted of new versions of well-known pop and dance tracks.
The main single was «We Are the Champions (Ding a Dang Dong)», based on the song by Queen. In the United Kingdom, the track reached number 11. At the end of the same year, Crazy Frog released a version of «Last Christmas» by Wham!, which climbed to number 16 on the UK chart.
Everybody Dance Now
The third studio album, «Everybody Dance Now», was released in 2009. On it, Crazy Frog continued reworking dance hits from previous decades. The tracklist included versions of «Cha Cha Slide», «Daddy DJ», «Safety Dance», «No Limit», «Push It», «Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)» and other songs.
«Everybody Dance Now» became the final studio album of Crazy Frog’s classic period. After 2009, new music releases from the project virtually stopped for more than a decade.
Musical style
Crazy Frog’s music belongs primarily to electronic dance music. Most of the best-known recordings are electronic versions of previously existing compositions, supplemented by the character’s distinctive vocal sounds.
The repertoire has included works from different eras and genres: Harold Faltermeyer’s «Axel F», Gershon Kingsley’s «Popcorn», Queen’s «We Are the Champions», Wham!’s «Last Christmas», Europe’s «The Final Countdown», Men Without Hats’ «Safety Dance» and other songs. In these adaptations, the original melodic motif was usually preserved, while the rhythm and arrangement were transformed into a dance format.
The 2021 comeback
After a long break, Crazy Frog returned with new music in 2021. The first single of the new period was «Tricky». The character’s visual appearance remained almost unchanged, but the project’s promotion was now focused primarily on YouTube, streaming services and social media rather than mobile ringtones.
In 2022, Crazy Frog released «A Ring Ding Ding Ding», followed by «Funny Song» in 2023 and «Hands Up (Explode)» in December 2024. The latter was released by Mach 1 Records with distribution by Sony Music Entertainment.
In 2026, the project’s catalogue was expanded with the single «Crazy Saxobeat», which was also accompanied by a new animated music video.
