Alsou (born Alsou Ralifovna Safina; born June 27, 1983, in Bugulma, Tatar ASSR, USSR) is a Russian pop singer, television presenter and actress. She began her music career at the age of 15 and gained widespread recognition with the songs «Зимний сон» and «Иногда». In 2000, Alsou represented Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song «Solo» and finished second — at the time, the country’s best result in the history of the competition. Her repertoire also includes such well-known songs as «Всё равно», «Вчера», «Иногда», «Я тебя не придумала», «Не молчи», «Мы с тобой», «Я учусь не бояться» and other compositions.
Childhood and family
Alsou was born in Bugulma. Her father, Ralif Safin, worked in the oil industry and later became a businessman and politician; her mother, Raziya Safina, trained as an architect. Because of her father’s work, Alsou spent the first years of her life in Kogalym in the Tyumen Region. The family later moved to Moscow.
Alsou began studying music as a child. From the age of five, she learned to play the piano. She later continued her education abroad, living and studying for some time in the United States and Denmark before enrolling at the London college MPW. She subsequently studied acting at GITIS under an individual program. In one interview, Alsou said that before beginning an intensive touring schedule, she had also studied classical singing in London.
Beginning of her music career
Alsou’s professional career began in 1998, when she was 15 years old. She started working with producer Valery Belotserkovsky, after which her first series of songs was recorded and music videos were filmed.
One of her most important early songs was «Зимний сон», written and composed by Alexander Shevchenko. The song was released in 1999 and, together with «Иногда», defined the first period of the singer’s career.
On September 15, 1999, her debut album «Алсу» was released. In addition to «Зимний сон» and «Иногда», it included «Весна», «Свет в твоём окне», «Последний звонок» and other songs. Following the album’s release, the singer began giving solo concerts and touring across Russia. According to Alsou’s official website, more than 700,000 copies of the album were sold during its first six months.
Eurovision 2000 and Solo
In May 2000, 16-year-old Alsou represented Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm. She performed the English-language song «Solo», written by Andrew Lane and Brandon Barnes. Russia received 155 points and finished second among 24 participants.
Until Dima Bilan’s victory in 2008, Alsou’s second place remained Russia’s best result at Eurovision. Her participation in the contest also laid the foundation for her entry into the international music market.
The English-language album Alsou
In 2001, the English-language album «Alsou» was released. It included «Solo», «Before You Love Me», «He Loves Me», «Let It Be Me», «Teardrops», as well as a duet version of «You're My #1» with Enrique Iglesias. The album was aimed primarily at a European audience and became the singer’s second full-length release after her Russian-language debut.
During this period, Alsou recorded material in both Russian and English. In 2002, the release «Мне приснилась осень» appeared, representing an expanded version of her earlier Russian-language material with additional songs.
The album «19»
On February 14, 2003, Alsou released the album «19», named after her age at the time it was prepared. The album’s key songs included «Вчера», «Всё равно», «Первый раз», «Летящая над облаками», «Осень», «Когда любовь ко мне придёт» and «Мечты».
«19» consolidated Alsou’s transition from the repertoire of her debut period toward a more mature pop sound. After the album’s release, she toured Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Georgia and the Baltic states. According to the singer’s official website, sales of «19» in Russia exceeded 800,000 copies.
Film work
Alongside music, Alsou also tried acting. In 2005, she appeared in the British supernatural thriller «Spirit Trap», playing the role of Tina; her song «Teardrops» was also featured in the film’s credits.
In 2009, Alsou appeared in Svetlana Druzhinina’s historical film «Тайны дворцовых переворотов. Фильм 7. Виват, Анна!» as the maid of honor Madeleine. That same year, she co-hosted the Eurovision final in Moscow together with Ivan Urgant.
«Самое главное»
After a five-year break between her main Russian-language studio albums, «Самое главное» was released in 2008. It continued the melodic pop and ballad-oriented direction characteristic of Alsou’s work.
Songs associated with this period include «Самое главное», «А у моей любви», «Первый час января» and other compositions.
«Туган Тел»
At the end of 2008, Alsou released a separate national project, «Туган Тел» («Native Language»). The album was recorded in the Tatar and Bashkir languages and occupies a distinct place in her discography.
This work was connected not with the singer’s usual Russian-language pop repertoire, but with Tatar and Bashkir musical culture, and included traditional songs presented in modern arrangements.
«Я тебя не придумала»
One of the most notable hits of the next stage of Alsou’s career was «Я тебя не придумала». Released in 2010, the song brought her back into active radio rotation after a period when new releases had appeared much less frequently. In 2011, the song received a Golden Gramophone Award.
«Фея добрых снов»
A separate project was the album «Фея добрых снов», recorded for children. It included lullabies and children’s songs familiar to several generations, including «Спят усталые игрушки» and «Спи, моя радость, усни». Digital services contain reissues of the album with later dates, which is why it is sometimes displayed as a 2019 release even though the original version appeared earlier.
Inspired
Alsou’s discography also includes the English-language project «Inspired». The material was recorded mainly during the first half of the 2000s but did not receive a conventional wide commercial release. In 2013, the album was distributed in a limited edition among members of the official fan club.
As a result, «Inspired» occupies an intermediate position between a full studio album and an archival special release and is not always available in streaming-service catalogs.
«Ты — это свет»
In 2014, Alsou released the album «Ты — это свет». It included material recorded during the preceding years, among them «Нет тебя дороже», «Останься», «Маленькое облачко» and other songs. The album marked her return to the format of a major Russian-language studio release.
«Письма, пришедшие с войны»
In 2015, Alsou presented the album «Письма, пришедшие с войны», dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War. The project was based on wartime songs and works connected with the memory of the war. The album was later reissued on digital platforms, which is why some services list 2019 as its release year.
«Не молчи» and the duet with Basta
In the second half of the 2010s, Alsou began releasing standalone singles more frequently. In 2018, she released «Не молчи» and the English-language track «Love U Back».
That same year, she released «Мы с тобой», recorded together with Basta. It was later included on the album «Я хочу одеться в белое».
«Я хочу одеться в белое»
On December 4, 2020, Alsou released the album «Я хочу одеться в белое», her first major pop release after «Письма, пришедшие с войны». The album contains 14 tracks.

«Ты приезжай» was written by Yevgeny Krylatov for the film «Новогодний ремонт» and became one of the composer’s final works.
«The Voice Kids» and Mikella Abramova
In 2019, Alsou’s daughter Mikella Abramova took part in the sixth season of the television project «The Voice Kids». In the final, she was initially announced as the winner after receiving 56.5% of the audience vote.
Following controversy surrounding the result, Channel One commissioned an independent technical investigation by Group-IB. Experts discovered large-scale automated voting in Mikella’s favor, after which the final results were annulled. The investigation found that hundreds of phone numbers and thousands of automated SMS messages had been used.
In an interview with Ksenia Sobchak in February 2020, Alsou said that she herself had sent 40 paid SMS votes for her daughter and had asked relatives and fans to vote. At the same time, the singer emphasized that such actions were permitted under the rules in force at the time, which allowed multiple votes from a single number, and stated that she had not known about the automated vote manipulation uncovered by Group-IB. Her own voting and the large-scale automated interference established by the technical investigation were therefore not the same thing.
Personal life
In 2006, Alsou married businessman Yan Abramov. The couple had three children: daughters Safina and Mikella, and a son, Rafael.
In 2024, Alsou filed for divorce. On August 27, 2024, the court officially dissolved the marriage after eighteen years together. It was reported that the children would remain with their mother.
«Я учусь не бояться» and a new stage
In 2024, Alsou released the song «Я учусь не бояться». It became one of her most notable solo releases of recent years and received a Golden Gramophone Award. This achievement is also noted in the singer’s official chronology.
In 2025, she followed it with «Чужая», «Табу» with Eva Vlasova, «Танцуй», «Мимо меня» and other singles. During the same period, Alsou recorded new collaborations with artists from the Russian and Bashkir music scenes.
Music in 2026
In 2026, the singer continued to release new music regularly. Her catalog expanded with «Армагеддон», «Белая фата» with Eva Vlasova, «Мама не знает» with Igor Krutoy, and the solo single «Мотылёк». The latter was released on July 24, 2026; both the lyrics and music were written by Alexander Malinovsky.
Musical style
The core of Alsou’s repertoire is Russian-language pop music, dominated by melodic songs at medium and slow tempos. Romantic ballads played a major role in her early recordings, while later arrangements incorporated elements of contemporary electronic pop and dance music.
Several areas of her discography differ significantly from the main pop direction. «Туган Тел» draws on Tatar and Bashkir material, «Фея добрых снов» consists of songs for children, «Письма, пришедшие с войны» is devoted to wartime themes, while the English-language albums «Alsou» and «Inspired» were created for a different musical context.
Alsou plays the piano and received musical training during childhood, but her main professional work is connected specifically with singing. For this reason, describing her primarily as a singer is more accurate than the commonly used phrase «singer and pianist».
