Neurofunk — the high-tech intelligence of drum & bass.

Neurofunk is one of the most complex, dark, and technologically advanced subgenres of drum & bass, built on neurophonic sound design, aggressive bass textures, and extreme rhythmic precision. This is music of machine intelligence, cyberpunk, and futuristic pressure — designed both for the dancefloor and for focused, analytical listening.

What is Neurofunk?

Neurofunk is a subgenre of drum & bass characterized by:

• a dark, cold, and aggressive sound,
• complex modular bass design,
• minimalist yet highly technical arrangements,
• high tempo (170–174 BPM),
• a sci-fi, techno-industrial futuristic atmosphere.

Unlike liquid DnB or jump up, Neurofunk is not built around melody or vocals. Its core is a moving, transforming bass that literally “speaks” and evolves within the track.

Origins of the genre: how Neurofunk emerged

Late 1990s — early 2000s

Neurofunk grew out of Techstep — a dark, industrial form of early drum & bass.

The key turning point was the work of Ed Rush & Optical, especially their album Wormhole (1998).

This release set a new standard:

• bass stopped being just a sub element,
• sound became modular, alive, and “intelligent”,
• track structures became more minimalistic yet more aggressive.

The term Neurofunk emerged to describe music that sounded “neural” — as if controlled by artificial intelligence.

The sound of Neurofunk: key characteristics

1. Neurophonic bass

The central element of the genre:

• complex FM basses,
• resonant filters,
• LFO modulation,
• distortion, phasing, automation.

The bass constantly evolves, “communicates,” and interacts with the rhythm.

2. Precision drum programming

• hard snare hits,
• sharp kicks,
• minimalist breakbeats,
• maximum clarity and control.

3. Tempo: 170–174 BPM

The classic DnB standard, but with a feeling of weight and control.

4. Dark atmosphere

Sci-fi themes, cyberpunk aesthetics, techno-industrial textures, dystopian moods.

5. Structural minimalism

Fewer melodies — more pressure and motion.

How Neurofunk differs from other forms of DnB

Genre	Main focus
Liquid DnB	Melody, vocals, emotion
Jump Up	Simplicity, dancefloor hooks
Techstep	Industrial harshness
Neurofunk	Sound design, intelligence, control
Darkstep	Extremity and chaos

Neurofunk is DnB for producers, sound engineers, and fans of complex structures.
