Death Metal — history, genre characteristics and legendary bands

Death Metal is an extreme subgenre of metal music known for its aggressive sound, low guttural vocals, technically complex guitar parts and dark lyrical themes. The genre emerged in the mid-1980s and became a logical evolution of thrash metal, amplifying its speed, heaviness and brutality.

Death Metal music is characterized by powerful guitar riffs, fast drum patterns and a distinctive vocal technique known as growling, where the vocals sound like a deep roar. Lyrics often explore themes such as death, the philosophy of life and mortality, horror, social criticism and science fiction.

Today, Death Metal remains one of the core styles of extreme music, giving rise to numerous subgenres and scenes around the world.

The origins of Death Metal

The roots of Death Metal go back to the 1980s, when several thrash metal bands began playing a faster, heavier and darker form of metal.

One of the earliest bands to anticipate the style was Possessed, whose album Seven Churches (1985) is often considered one of the first releases of the genre. The term Death Metal itself became widely used thanks to a song of the same name by the band.

Another key figure in the early development of the genre was the band Death, founded by Chuck Schuldiner. Their album Scream Bloody Gore (1987) is widely regarded as one of the first fully realized Death Metal albums.

The formation of the genre (late 1980s)

By the late 1980s, a full Death Metal scene had formed, primarily in the United States, especially in Florida.

The Florida Death Metal scene became the center of the genre’s development. Many legendary bands recorded their albums at Morrisound Recording studio.

Key artists of that period include:

  • Death
  • Morbid Angel
  • Obituary
  • Deicide
  • Cannibal Corpse
  • Possessed

These bands laid the foundation for the sound and aesthetic of Death Metal.

Musical and technical characteristics

Death Metal is distinguished by a complex and aggressive musical structure.

Guitars

Guitar parts usually include:

  • fast and heavy riffs
  • down-tuned guitars
  • technical guitar solos
  • frequent use of palm-muting

The guitar sound is dense, saturated and extremely heavy.

Drums

Drums play a crucial role in creating the intensity of the music.

Typical elements include:

  • blast beats
  • double bass drumming
  • complex rhythmic transitions
  • very high playing speed

Vocals

The most recognizable feature of Death Metal is growling.

The vocals are typically:

  • low and guttural
  • aggressive
  • sometimes almost unintelligible

In some subgenres, other vocal techniques may also appear, including screaming or pig squeals.

Production

Unlike early Black Metal, Death Metal often aimed for a more powerful and clean production to emphasize the heaviness of the sound and the technical complexity of the music.

Themes and aesthetics

Death Metal lyrics are often inspired by:

  • horror
  • death and decay
  • medical and anatomical imagery
  • philosophy of life and death
  • social and political themes
  • science fiction

Album covers are typically known for their shocking and highly detailed artwork, often inspired by horror art.

One of the most famous artists associated with the genre is Vincent Locke, known for his iconic cover art for Cannibal Corpse.

Death Metal subgenres

Over time, Death Metal has evolved into numerous stylistic branches.

  • Technical Death Metal — complex structures, virtuoso playing and progressive elements.
  • Brutal Death Metal — extremely heavy and aggressive sound.
  • Melodic Death Metal — combines Death Metal aggression with melodic guitar work.
  • Deathgrind — a fusion of Death Metal and grindcore.
  • Progressive Death Metal — incorporates complex musical structures and progressive influences.
