Phonk — a style born from the streets: music with the character of the 90s and the spirit of modern urban culture

Phonk is a musical genre that combines the groove of 90s hip-hop, the lo-fi atmosphere, and the dark aesthetics of trap. It is distinguished by vintage samples, heavy basslines, rap with a touch of street romanticism, and a psychedelic delivery. At its core are cassette recordings, slowed + reverb vocals, and old-school rap samples that reference the Memphis rap culture.

Phonk originally emerged in the United States, but its modern wave of popularity came in the 2010s thanks to artists such as DJ Smokey, $uicideboy$, Night Lovell, Kordhell, Pharmacist, LXST CXNTURY, as well as numerous beatmakers releasing tracks on SoundCloud and YouTube. Phonk gained particular attention thanks to TikTok and drift videos set to heavy slowed-down rhythms.

Among its subgenres are drift phonk, classic phonk, trap phonk, and phonk house — each offering its own variation of street sound with different rhythmic accents. Today, Phonk is actively used in short videos, games, motorsport, and street culture, continuing to grow in popularity worldwide.
