В это время Батюшков находился в Бессарабии при штабе А. Н. Бахметева, ожидая перевода в гвардию. Впервые стихотворение было опубликовано в 1817 году в сборнике "Опыты в стихах и прозе". Элегия вошла в "каменецкий цикл". Стихотворение было послано Екатерине Фёдоровне Муравьёвой (оба ее сына Никита и Александр были декабристами) при письме от 11 августа 1815 года.
