Tiesto (real name — Tijs Michiel Verwest; born January 17, 1969, Breda, Netherlands) is a Dutch DJ, producer, and one of the most influential artists in the history of electronic music. A multiple award winner, including a Grammy, he was named The Greatest DJ of All Time by Mixmag. His name has become synonymous with trance and EDM culture of the 21st century.
Early Life
Tiesto’s musical talent emerged at an early age. At 12, he performed for the first time at a school party, and by 14, he was DJing at local events. The pseudonym Tiësto appeared during his teenage years and became the stage name under which he gained global fame.
Career Beginnings
In the late 1980s, Tiesto became a resident of the club The Spock in his hometown of Breda, where he honed his craft and developed a taste for electronic genres such as acid house, new beat, and trance. In 1994, he signed with the Basic Beat label and released his first singles. Later, he founded his own labels — Magik Muzik and Black Hole Recordings.
Breakthrough and Global Fame
Tiesto’s breakthrough came in the late 1990s, when he began performing at major festivals such as Innercity, Love Parade, Gatecrasher, and Trance Energy. In 1999, his mix album Summerbreeze cemented his status as one of Europe’s leading trance DJs. That same year, he began collaborating with Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten, creating the project Gouryella.
