MC Saci (real name — José Elias da Silva; born February 5, 1995) is a Brazilian MC, songwriter and entrepreneur from São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro state. His career is primarily associated with funk brasileiro and the Belo Horizonte scene, where he developed his own style at the intersection of local funk and Detroit trap rhythms. This approach became known as funktroit and evolved into a central part of his musical identity.
MC Saci became widely known across Brazil through tracks such as Aquariano Nato, A Internet É Tóxica and De 10 Mulher 11 É Maluca. Their success on streaming platforms and social media brought him into the Billboard Brasil Hot 100, but by the time of his national breakthrough, Saci had already spent many years working within the funk scene, releasing his own music and building a professional network in Belo Horizonte.
José Elias and the origin of the name MC Saci
José Elias da Silva was born on February 5, 1995 in the state of Rio de Janeiro and grew up in São Gonçalo. His stage name appeared long before his professional music career began.
During his school years, friends started calling him Saci — after one of the best-known characters in Brazilian folklore. The nickname quickly stuck because of the future musician’s sociable personality and strong presence: over time, it was used not only by his classmates but also by teachers.
Before settling on his current name, he performed as MC Pretinho, but the school nickname felt more natural and gradually became his full-fledged artistic identity.
Unlike many performers who gain attention soon after their first recordings, MC Saci followed a much longer path. By the time Aquariano Nato became successful, he had already spent around fifteen years working in music. National popularity was the result of accumulated experience rather than the beginning of his career.
Moving from Rio de Janeiro to Belo Horizonte
One of the most important decisions in MC Saci’s biography was his move from Rio de Janeiro to Belo Horizonte in 2018.
At the time, fast funk at around 150 BPM had become increasingly popular in Rio. Saci preferred a tempo closer to 130 BPM — looser, more swinging and better suited to his vocal delivery. He found exactly that kind of musical environment in the capital of Minas Gerais.
The move was not only a creative decision. In Rio, the artist faced difficulties with the number of performance opportunities and with advancing his career, while in Belo Horizonte he saw a chance to establish his own place within a rapidly growing local scene.
This step ultimately shaped the next stage of MC Saci’s career. Although he was born in Rio de Janeiro state, he achieved national recognition as one of the notable representatives of the contemporary funk de BH scene.
Belo Horizonte funk
Belo Horizonte gradually became one of the most important centres of Brazilian funk. Unlike Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the local scene developed its own approach to tempo, editing, vocal parts and the role of DJs.
The sound is characterised by relatively open instrumental structures, regional vocabulary, short vocal phrases and close interaction between MCs and producers. The MTG format — montagem — also plays an important role, rebuilding different vocal and musical elements over a new beat.
MC Saci entered this environment at a time when it was developing rapidly. Rather than reproducing the Rio de Janeiro model of funk, he began working with local DJs and gradually adapted his own delivery to the musical language of Belo Horizonte.
Eu Sou o Astro
One of the first major releases in MC Saci’s established discography was the album Eu Sou o Astro, released in 2021.
The nine-track record included Preto Exigente, Trazendo Lucro pro Chefe, Strip Pros Vapor, Clandestino, Arrocha Com Seu Safado, Era Apenas Sua Vez and other tracks.
The album title itself — “I Am the Star” — reflected Saci’s characteristic stage persona. In his lyrics, self-confidence often exists alongside self-irony, everyday observations and an exaggerated image of the protagonist. This ability to turn his own personality into a character would later become one of the reasons his songs spread so effectively online.
Meu Complexo and building his own circle
In December 2022, Saci released his second major project, Meu Complexo. It contained sixteen tracks, including Vem pro Complexo, Nunca Mais Eu Vou Amar Ninguém, Hoje Vai Rolar, 1,65 de Altura, Primo do Orochi e do Ig and Pra Fazer as Pazes.
This period also saw the development of Saci’s own professional collective, Complexo dos Hits. From an artist dependent on other people’s infrastructure, he gradually became an organiser of the music-making process as well.
Complexo dos Hits brought together MCs, songwriters and DJs from Belo Horizonte. Musicians closely associated with this circle included MC Pretchako and DJ LC, who later took part in some of Saci’s best-known recordings.
This side of his career is important for understanding his later success. MC Saci developed not only as a vocalist, but also as someone capable of building a team around himself that could regularly record, release and promote new music.
What is funktroit?
The style most closely associated with MC Saci became known as funktroit.
The artist himself connects its origins with the influence of Detroit trap. This does not simply mean transferring American rap directly into Brazilian funk, but rather working with vocal rhythm: a more conversational delivery, short lines, displaced accents and freer movement of the voice against the beat.
Saci adapted this approach to the musical environment of Belo Horizonte. As a result, elements of Detroit flow became combined with Brazilian club rhythms, local vocabulary and humour.
Funktroit is therefore best understood as an individual direction within the contemporary Brazilian funk scene, closely associated with MC Saci himself and his circle of regular collaborators. The term became particularly visible after the release of the project of the same name and the subsequent success of Aquariano Nato.
The album Funktroit
In July 2023, MC Saci released Funktroit — an eight-track project in which the new concept took its clearest form.
The album opens with É o Rei do Sexo, recorded with Djonga and DJ Sammer. It is followed by O Momento É Agora, the title track Funktroit, Quem Será a Sortuda, Aquariano Nato, Apaixonada em Nike and Oi Rua.
Aquariano Nato occupies a particularly important place on the record. Created with the participation of MC Pretchako and connected with the production work of Saci’s team, the track was initially part of the wider Funktroit concept but later took on a life entirely of its own.
Aquariano Nato
Aquariano Nato became the major turning point in MC Saci’s career.
The song revolves around the image of a “typical Aquarius” — a man who values freedom and is reluctant to tie himself down in a serious relationship. For Saci, the concept also contained an autobiographical joke: he was born on February 5 and is himself an Aquarius.
However, it was not only the recording itself that gave the song national reach. In late 2023 and early 2024, Aquariano Nato began spreading rapidly through short online videos and edits.
Videos featuring internet personality Chico Moedas became particularly popular. The connection between his public image and the song’s subject worked so well within meme culture that the track became an unofficial soundtrack for countless edits. It was later used in entirely different kinds of videos, from football compilations to humorous content.
The success of Aquariano Nato therefore became a characteristic example of how Brazilian funk spreads in the digital era: a track gains its initial momentum within a local scene, becomes an internet meme and only afterwards reaches a mass streaming audience.
Billboard Brasil Hot 100
In February 2024, Aquariano Nato debuted on the Billboard Brasil Hot 100. Over the following weeks, the track rose quickly through the ranking and entered the top ten most popular songs in the country.
At the same time, the success was no longer limited to one track. Two other MC Saci songs also appeared on the Billboard Brasil Hot 100 — A Internet É Tóxica and De 10 Mulher 11 É Maluca.
A Internet É Tóxica also gained wide attention thanks to its easily recognisable chorus, conversational delivery and lyrics about modern relationships, jealousy and people’s behaviour on social media.
During the period of his biggest breakthrough, MC Saci also entered the Billboard Brasil Artistas 25, a ranking of the country’s most in-demand artists. This definitively moved him from the status of a notable Belo Horizonte scene figure to a nationally recognised representative of Brazilian funk.
Why MC Saci’s songs work so well on social media
Saci’s online success is not only the result of a fortunate moment surrounding Aquariano Nato. His songs naturally contain qualities that suit short-form video.
He often uses simple, highly quotable phrases, conversational humour, repeated lines and situations that make sense even without hearing the entire song. A single line can function almost independently as a catchphrase, meme or video caption.
At the same time, his music is rarely overloaded with complicated melodic structures. The MC’s voice remains at the centre, while the rhythm leaves enough open space for the lyrics.
The artist’s team also worked deliberately with social media, releasing short subtitled videos and material that could easily be reused by online content creators. Virality therefore became not an accidental addition to Saci’s music, but part of the modern model through which it circulates.
Funktroit, Vol. 1
Following the release of Funktroit and the rapid growth of his audience, Saci continued developing the idea with Funktroit, Vol. 1, released in February 2024.
The project was noticeably larger than its predecessor and contained thirteen tracks. Guest contributors included MC Carol, MC Rodrigo do CN, MC Pretchako and other representatives of Brazil’s contemporary urban music scene.
Rather than simply attempting to repeat Aquariano Nato, Saci used the release as a continuation of his collective working model, in which MCs, DJs and writers regularly move from one recording to another.
Quem Não Erra em 2024
In July 2024, Saci released the EP Quem Não Erra em 2024. It contained six tracks: Me Fez Chorar, Nós 2 Juntos Não Combinou, Só Quer Mamão Só Quer Mel, Edit do Chico Oficial, Estresse Diário and Canceriana Nata.
The material continued one of Saci’s characteristic themes — ironic observations about romantic relationships. After songs centred on the free-spirited “Aquariano Nato”, the artist increasingly began to play with astrological and internet archetypes, turning them into recognisable characters.
During the same period, his lyrics also showed a growing desire to move away from an overly rigid male point of view and address relationships in a way that could resonate with a broader audience.
Mix Tape Dono das Ruas
The next major project, Mix Tape Dono das Ruas, was released in 2025. Unlike the shorter Funktroit, the release contained sixteen tracks and demonstrated a broader range from the artist.
It included Medley das Relikias do Astro, Mayara e Maraisa, Parece Ontem, Mas é Hoje, Não Compensa, Zero Zero, Qual Foi o Tipo de Droga and Tudo Começa Com Gin.
The mixtape title emphasised another characteristic of MC Saci: despite national success and major streaming figures, his music continues to rely on baile funk culture, local communities and direct collaboration with a large number of DJs and MCs.
After this release, his catalogue continued to be marked by a high frequency of new music: standalone singles, montagens, collaborative recordings and shorter projects appeared alongside larger releases.
Complexo dos Hits
Complexo dos Hits occupies a distinct place in Saci’s career. It is not simply a name that regularly appears in the credits of his recordings, but a music structure of his own that the artist developed in Belo Horizonte.
Saci combines performing with entrepreneurial activity and takes part in developing other MCs, songwriters and producers. This model is characteristic of the contemporary Brazilian funk industry, where the boundaries between artist, songwriter, production team and independent label are often far less rigid than in the traditional music business.
Complexo dos Hits also explains why the same names repeatedly appear throughout MC Saci’s discography. For him, collaboration is not an occasional invitation to a high-profile guest, but a permanent working method.
MC Saci’s musical style
The foundation of MC Saci’s music remains Brazilian funk, but his sound has been strongly shaped by the Belo Horizonte scene.
His recordings are characterised by medium-to-fast club tempos, minimalist beats, plenty of space for the voice and phrases designed to be remembered immediately. Instead of traditional melodic singing, Saci uses a rhythmic conversational delivery, constantly changing the density of his lines and the placement of accents.
In funktroit, this is combined with the influence of Detroit rap and trap — particularly in the way he delivers vocals over the beat. The American influence does not replace the Brazilian foundation: the language, humour, rhythmic base and the broader culture of music production remain rooted in funk brasileiro.
Comedy also plays a significant role. Saci can turn an everyday situation, a failed relationship, an internet phrase or an exaggerated description of himself into a song. This self-irony separates him from more serious street rap while also making his material easier to spread beyond the traditional funk audience.

MC Saci’s significance to the contemporary funk brasileiro scene
MC Saci’s story is notable above all because his national success did not emerge from Brazil’s traditional music-industry centres. Born in São Gonçalo, he deliberately left Rio de Janeiro and built the most important part of his career in Belo Horizonte at a time when the city’s funk scene itself was becoming a significant force on a national scale.
His contribution is not limited to Aquariano Nato. Funktroit gave Saci his own musical language and a convenient name for the combination of funk de BH with the influence of Detroit flow, while Complexo dos Hits allowed him to extend the same principle of collective work from individual studio sessions into a more permanent structure.
At the same time, his major commercial breakthrough clearly illustrates the dynamics of contemporary Brazilian popular music. Aquariano Nato travelled from a local funk release to an internet meme and then to one of the most popular songs in the country. Audiences subsequently discovered more of Saci’s work, resulting in several of his tracks appearing on national charts at the same time.
MC Saci therefore occupies an interesting position between several worlds: the tradition of baile funk, Belo Horizonte’s experimental scene, the aesthetics of contemporary rap and the culture of social media. It is at the intersection of these environments that an artist emerged for whom a local sound became a way to reach a nationwide Brazilian audience without abandoning the musical world from which he came.
