Krasnaya Plesen is a Russian-language satirical punk rock project founded in 1989 in Yalta by Pavel Yatsyna. The group’s music combines punk rock, hard rock, musical parody, chastushki, spoken sketches and so-called punk fairy tales. Founder and permanent leader Pavel Yatsyna works as vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist, composer, lyricist and sound engineer.
Krasnaya Plesen became widely known in the 1990s through cassette circulation, relying very little on traditional radio or television. Profanity, everyday and political satire, parodies of popular music, fictional characters and lengthy audio plays formed a distinctive format somewhere between a punk band, a home studio and a comedy audio theater.
By 2026, the official numbered discography of Krasnaya Plesen consists of 108 albums. It includes conventional song-based releases, musical fairy tales, parody series, archival recordings, compilations, parallel projects and later studio experiments.
Pavel Yatsyna
Pavel Anatolyevich Yatsyna was born on August 10, 1969, in Krasnodar. He spent part of his childhood in Anapa before his family moved to Yalta. He began playing guitar while still at school and formed his first bands as a teenager, drawing inspiration in part from heavy metal.
Yatsyna did not receive professional musical education. Before music became his main occupation, he served in the army, worked as a security guard and cultural worker, performed in a vocal-instrumental ensemble and played at recreational institutions in Yalta.
In 1989, he started the project that became known as Krasnaya Plesen. During the first years, there was effectively no permanent full-band lineup: Pavel recorded a substantial part of the material himself.
First home recordings
The early albums were created in apartment conditions. Yatsyna used a Yamaha synthesizer, electric guitar, microphone, mixer, reverb unit and a consumer cassette recorder. Instrumental parts and voices were recorded through successive overdubbing.
The earliest tapes used vocal parodies, backing tracks, fragments of familiar melodies and improvised dialogue. Some characters sounded as though the recording had been made by an entire ensemble, even though Yatsyna himself performed a large share of the parts.
To strengthen the impression of a real band, fictional members even appeared in some early materials. Later, actual musicians, female vocalists, parody performers and lyricists began joining the project.
First albums
The official numbering of the discography begins with «Первый альбом», material for which dates to 1991–1992. It was followed by «Сопля в левом ухе», «Удар по яйцам», «Металлист Балалайкин» and «Новый год».
Early versions of these recordings existed primarily on cassette. Some of the first albums were later reissued with altered track lists, so dates and contents of the early releases may differ across catalogs.
The project’s basic ingredients were already taking shape at this stage: punk and hard rock coexisted with chastushki, popular-song melodies, parody and deliberately primitive electronic arrangements.
Cassette circulation
One of the factors behind the rapid spread of Krasnaya Plesen was Yalta itself — a major resort city. Cassettes reached vacationers from different regions of the former USSR, were copied and carried back to other cities.
Pavel Yatsyna later linked the speed of the group’s spread directly to this circumstance. There was virtually no advertising: recordings circulated through private copying, markets, music stalls and cassette exchange.
By the mid-1990s, songs by Krasnaya Plesen were already known far beyond Crimea, even though the group was almost absent from mainstream media.
Transition to studio work
From 1994–1995 onward, guest performers were increasingly brought into the recording process. They included guitarists, vocalists, arrangers and parody artists capable of imitating the voices of famous entertainers, politicians and pop-culture characters.
In 1995, Yatsyna began working with the Simferopol studio Vest. The production gradually became denser: synthesizer arrangements were supplemented by guitars, multivoice recording became more elaborate, and the pool of performers expanded.
On August 11, 1995, Krasnaya Plesen played one of its first full-scale concerts at the Mir cinema in Simferopol. Even so, the group remained primarily a studio project for many years.
Punk fairy tales
One of the most recognizable formats associated with Krasnaya Plesen is the punk fairy tale. Familiar plots from children’s literature and folklore were rewritten as parody audio plays featuring rock songs, dialogue, vocal impersonations and crude humor.
This category includes «Спящая красавица», «Золушка», «Аленький цветочек», «Красная Шапочка», the two-part «Сказка о царе Салтане» and other works.
Unlike ordinary song albums, these releases were structured as unified narratives. Long spoken scenes, parodies of famous people and recurring characters from the internal world of Krasnaya Plesen appeared between musical numbers.
«Спящая красавица»
The first part of «Спящая красавица» dates to the mid-1990s. The sequel entered the official discography in 1997.
The punk fairy tales make the transition from the early home tapes to more complex studio production especially clear. Additional performers began to be invited for voice work, and individual characters received their own vocal parts.
1997–1999: expansion of the format
In the second half of the 1990s, Krasnaya Plesen released several works per year. The official discography from this period includes «Зэ бэст, твою мать!», «Профессор Бибизинский и китайский размер тапок», «Золушка», «Куликовская битва», «Бульбец „Титанику“», «Аленький цветочек» and «Секс по телефону».
By this point, the project had fully evolved into a studio collective centered on Pavel Yatsyna. The lineup depended on each particular album: some musicians recorded guitars, others handled parody voices, female parts, arrangements or lyrics.
«СОЮЗ Популярных Пародий»
A separate series consisted of the «СОЮЗ Популярных Пародий» albums. The title parodied the numerous Russian pop compilations that were especially popular on the cassette and CD market of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The first numbered release in the series was «СОЮЗ Популярных Пародий 717» in 1999. It was followed by editions with the indices 828, 1000, 3003, 2002, 6006, 4004, 7007, 8800, 9900, XXX, 1.000.000, 5.000.000 and 16.000.000.
On these albums, well-known pop and rock songs received new satirical lyrics and parody performances. Parodies became one of the most prolific directions of Krasnaya Plesen in the early 2000s.
Musical language of the 2000s
At the beginning of the 2000s, the synthesizer foundation was increasingly supplemented with heavy guitar parts. Albums from this period included «Гаечный ключ для крейсера „Авроры“», «Пошли все на…», «Сосни, попса!», «От окраин до Кремля», «Муха-ссыкатуха» and «Бульб*лятор».
By the middle of the decade, the guitar sound had become noticeably heavier. At the same time, the project retained electronic rhythm sections, parody voices and its stylistic eclecticism.
Punk, hard rock, chastushki, pop parody, disco and imitations of popular musical styles could all appear on the same album.
«Трилогия русского панк-рока» and later 2000s albums
In 2006, «Трилогия русского панк-рока» was released, followed by «46-й альбом», «Дискотека ефрейтора Сруля» and the second part of «Баллады».
In 2008, «ЖеZZZть» and «Керосин» appeared, followed by «Дефолт» in 2009.
By then, the cassette and compact-disc markets were rapidly shrinking. For a project that had long existed largely through physical media sales, this meant the working model had to change.
Transition to regular live performance
Although the first Krasnaya Plesen concerts took place in the 1990s, regular touring began much later. From approximately the end of the 2000s, concert activity became one of the project’s main directions.
Full stage lineups were assembled with guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and several vocalists. Even then, the live lineup changed much more frequently than that of a traditional rock band.
Yatsyna himself emphasized that Krasnaya Plesen had always been more of a creative collective centered around one author than a group with an unchanging lineup. Over the decades, dozens of performers took part in the project’s studio and concert work.
The shovel guitar
One of Pavel Yatsyna’s best-known technical experiments was an electric guitar made from a shovel. The instrument appeared in the late 2000s and was used at concerts and in video recordings by the group.
Yatsyna later created new variations of similar instruments — a shovel bass, shovel cello, oar guitar and other designs.
This idea also led to the parallel project Shovellica, whose name combines the English word shovel with a reference to Metallica. Guitar parts for the project were recorded on instruments of this type.
Yatsyna’s shovel guitar was recognized by the Ukrainian Book of Records as the world’s first electric guitar made from a shovel.
Animated music videos
The visual side of Krasnaya Plesen also developed outside the traditional rock industry. A large share of the group’s videos were created using drawn and computer animation.
Artist and animator Pavel Bezrukov has worked with the group for many years, designing album artwork and creating animated videos.
At different times, collections of animated clips were released in connection with the projects «Панки грязи не боятся», «Аленький цветочек» and «СОЮЗ Популярных Пародий».
Parallel projects
In addition to the main discography, a number of side projects emerged around Krasnaya Plesen. Among the best known are Shovellica, the parody project «Верка Смердючка» and various series of alternative versions and compilations.
Some of these recordings were later incorporated into the general official numbering. As a result, the modern Krasnaya Plesen catalog is structured in an unusual way: albums are not arranged strictly by original release date, and some archival or parallel projects received numbers long after they were created.
The 2010s: from «СОЮЗ 2010» to «ГОСТ 59-2019»
In 2010, «СОЮЗ Популярных Пародий 2010» was released. Two years later came the 56th album, «21.12.2012».
The pace of new numbered releases then slowed. In 2016, the group released «Dubрые хиты», followed in 2017 by «Утерянные песни», which collected archival material from the early period.
The album «Демотиваторы» was officially released in 2018 and assigned number 53 in the group’s proprietary numbering system despite its much later release date. This is one example of why the album numbers of Krasnaya Plesen should not be treated as a strictly chronological sequence.
Pavel Yatsyna’s departure and return
At the end of 2017, Pavel Yatsyna announced his decision to leave the concert lineup. His final announced performance before the break took place on February 25, 2018, in Moscow. Sergey Levchenko temporarily became the frontman.
The break proved short-lived. In 2019, Yatsyna returned to Krasnaya Plesen and resumed both studio and concert work.
In October of the same year, «ГОСТ 59-2019» appeared — the first new numbered album following the founder’s return.
The new period after 2020
From the beginning of the 2020s, the official discography began expanding much more rapidly. In 2020, «СОЮЗ параллельных проектов 60» and «Бери топор, руби хардкор» were released.
In the following years came «Утерянные песни 2», «Памяти В. Цоя», «Лирика», «Пробивные хиты», «Абсурдные куплеты», Shovellica 2, «Квадратные очки» and a live album recorded at the Yalta Theater.
The project continued combining new recordings with archival material, reissues and experimental offshoots.
«Емеля HD»
In 2022, the punk musical «Емеля HD» was released. Pavel Yatsyna recorded vocals, keyboards and guitar and participated in the creation of the music, lyrics and arrangements. Dmitry Vorontsov performed the narrator’s voice and parody parts.
The release continued the tradition of long musical fairy tales established by «Спящая красавица» and «Золушка».
«Сгенерировано без искусственного интеллекта»
In 2023, the album «Сгенерировано без искусственного интеллекта» entered the official discography. Its title played on the rapid rise of generative technologies while emphasizing the group’s traditional, manually created approach to producing material.
During the same period, «Баллады 90-х», «Слева молот, справа серп!» and the punk fairy tale «Айболит» also appeared.
Documentary film
In 2023, a large documentary film about Krasnaya Plesen was released, prepared by Pavel Yatsyna and Alexey Samartsev.
The film brought together archival material and the history of the project from the earliest home recordings to its modern studio and concert activity.
2024 releases
In 2024, the official catalog expanded with «Панк-рок на античной арфе», «Вечный бульбец Бибизинского», «Кубинский подорожник», «СОЮЗ ТОП 10 Пародий», «Корпоратив без Илона Маска» and «Изучайте кибернетику».
The project «Памяти творчества Ю. Хоя», connected with material by Yuri Klinskikh and the band Sektor Gaza, was also added to the official list.
The 100th album
In 2025, Krasnaya Plesen officially reached number 100 in its own discography. The album was titled «Частушки на топоре».
Pavel Yatsyna performed vocal and guitar parts and handled the arrangements, sound engineering, lyrics and music. Guest female vocalists and parody performers also participated in the recording.
The release of new material did not stop after the 100th album. In the same year, «Панк-сказки. Часть 1», «Мохнатый VPN», «Отпуск в Зимбабве», «Когда время уходит назад» and «Танцы с бубном» appeared.
Krasnaya Plesen in 2026
In 2026, the official discography continued to grow. Album No. 106 was titled «Платиновый альбом», No. 107 — «Фоновая музыка по мотивам хитов», and No. 108 — «Новая Золушка».
The group also remains active on stage. Its official website lists performances in Saint Petersburg, Tula, Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod for autumn 2026, as well as concerts scheduled for early 2027.
Musical style
The description «punk rock» covers only part of the Krasnaya Plesen catalog. Over the years, the project has used hard rock, heavy metal, electronic music, pop, disco, chastushki, stylized mainstream pop and musical theater.
The early recordings are easily recognizable by their Yamaha synthesizer, programmed rhythms and deliberately homemade sound. From the late 1990s onward, guitars took up more space, and in the 2000s heavy riffs became firmly established in the main body of the repertoire.
At the same time, the music almost always serves as a framework for the lyrics and characters. Even heavy guitar compositions may sit alongside monologues, everyday sketches and voice impersonations.
Parody and satire
The satirical range of Krasnaya Plesen is extremely broad. Its songs mock Soviet and post-Soviet everyday habits, mass culture, politics, the army, alcohol, relationships, television, pop entertainment and musical subcultures.
A large portion of the group’s best-known material contains profanity and is intended for an adult audience. At the same time, the catalog also includes releases with considerably more restrained lyrics, especially ballads and certain lyrical compilations.
Absurdity remains an important feature. Characters and situations are often pushed deliberately into impossible or caricatured territory, so a literal reading of many lyrics does not reflect their parodic nature.
Parody voices
Voice impersonations were already present on the earliest tapes. At first, Pavel Yatsyna voiced a large share of the characters himself; later, specialist parody performers were brought into the project.
Over the years, Dmitry Vorontsov, Sergey Levchenko and other performers took part in the recordings. They imitated famous entertainers, television presenters, politicians and fictional characters.
Parody voices are especially important to the «СОЮЗ Популярных Пародий» series and the musical fairy tales.
Lineup and structure of the project
Krasnaya Plesen has never had a single permanent lineup in the traditional sense. Pavel Yatsyna remained the central author and organizer, while session musicians, singers, parody performers, artists, arrangers and sound engineers worked around him.
Yatsyna himself has said in interviews that more than one hundred participants and co-authors have passed through the project over the course of its history.
On the official website, the core team in 2026 is listed as follows:
- Pavel Yatsyna — leader, founder, vocals, guitar, keyboards, music, lyrics, sound engineering;
- Alexey Samartsev — manager, publisher, designer, live keyboards and backing vocals;
- Pavel Bezrukov — artist, cover designer and creator of animated music videos.
The concert lineup may also be expanded with guest musicians.

The numbering of the official discography does not always correspond to chronology: some archival recordings, parallel projects and reissues were incorporated into the main catalog long after they were originally created.
Place in music culture
Krasnaya Plesen developed outside the traditional music industry and gained almost all of its early recognition through unofficial cassette circulation. Home production, low-budget sound and the absence of mainstream radio support did not prevent the project from building an enormous catalog and a stable audience of its own.
Over more than three decades, studio technology has changed completely, but the basic structure of Krasnaya Plesen has remained recognizable: Pavel Yatsyna, guest voices and musicians, punk rock, parody, fairy-tale characters, crude humor and the constant transformation of contemporary mass culture into material for yet another album.
