The Beginning
The city of Ivanovo is famous not only as the “City of Brides” but also as the birthplace of one of Russia’s brightest pop groups — Diskoteka Avariya. The story of the band began in the late 1980s, when Nikolay Timofeev met Alexey Ryzhov. Their friendship and creative partnership grew out of the university KVN comedy scene, where they first combined humor and music.
Later, the duo became regular hosts of student parties and discos. In 1990, they launched their own radio show called “Diskoteka Avariya”, which ran for three years and laid the foundation for the band’s future name and identity.
The Name and First Steps
The name “Diskoteka Avariya” (“Disco Crash”) originated from the local club Avariya, where the future members performed. As Alexey Ryzhov recalled: “Once, we were asked to host a disco. We did — and realized we could have fun and make money doing it!”
Their early path was full of amusing and even chaotic moments — from burst heating pipes to technical mishaps during shows. But the band stayed loyal to their “accident-prone” name, believing it perfectly reflected their spirit and humor.
Formation of the Band
In 1992, Oleg Zhukov joined the group, adding charisma and deep bass vocals. In 1996, Alexey Serov completed the lineup, turning the duo into a full-fledged quartet. Together, they began writing original songs, parodies, and covers, which soon evolved into true hits.
By this time, the group was touring actively across the Ivanovo region and beyond — performing everywhere from small village celebrations to major festivals.
Debut Album and Recognition
In 1997, their debut album “Dance with Me” (Tantsuy so mnoy) was released. It quickly spread across the region and made the group local stars. Their next goal was Moscow. Alexey Ryzhov brought their demo tape to the capital’s Soyuz studio. After months of waiting, fate smiled on the band — the demo reached a music editor, leading to their first record deal.
That marked the start of Diskoteka Avariya’s national success. Their songs began to play on major radio stations, and their music videos aired on television.
Rise to Fame
In the late 1990s, the group released the albums “A Song About You and Me” and “Marathon”, which brought them nationwide popularity. Hits like “Ty kinula” (“You Dumped Me”) and “Ya tebya ne skoro” (“I Won’t See You Soon”) became their calling cards, while music videos like “Novogodnyaya” (“New Year’s Song”), “Davai, Avariya!” and “Nekuda devat’sya” further cemented their fame.
Their hallmark was self-irony, humor, and sincerity — qualities that won the hearts of audiences across Russia.
Peak Popularity
The group reached its commercial peak with the release of “Manyaki” (“Maniacs”) in 2001, which topped the charts and won Album of the Year. During this period, Diskoteka Avariya became one of the most in-demand acts in Russian show business. Their songs were everywhere — on radio, TV, and in major advertising campaigns.
Tragedy and a New Chapter
In February 2002, tragedy struck — Oleg Zhukov passed away. His death was a heavy blow for both the group and their fans. However, a few months later, the remaining members returned to the stage, dedicating their future work to his memory.
In 2006, the band released the album “Four Guys” (Chetvero parney), keeping Zhukov’s spirit alive through their music.
