Blur - Biography and discography, all albums and songs

Blur

Blur is a legendary British rock band formed in 1988 in London. The group is considered one of the founders of the britpop genre and had a tremendous influence on the development of the British music scene of the 1990s. The band members are Damon Albarn (vocals, keyboards), Graham Coxon (guitar), Alex James (bass), and Dave Rowntree (drums).

Early Years and Formation

The future members of Blur met while studying at Goldsmiths College in London. The group was originally called Seymour, but on the advice of their label Food Records, they changed the name to Blur. Their debut album “Leisure” (1991) combined elements of shoegaze and Madchester, capturing the spirit of the early '90s. Although it wasn’t a major breakthrough, tracks like “There’s No Other Way” and “She’s So High” drew critical and public attention.

The Britpop Era and Worldwide Fame

True success came with their second album “Modern Life Is Rubbish” (1993), which became a manifesto of the new British identity. Together with Oasis, Blur defined the britpop era — a genre that stood in contrast to American grunge.

In 1994, the album “Parklife” turned the band into a national phenomenon. Songs like “Girls & Boys”, “End of a Century”, and the title track “Parklife” became anthems of a generation, while Damon Albarn’s charisma made Blur media icons.

The next album, “The Great Escape” (1995), cemented their success and became the peak of the “Britpop battle” — the famous chart rivalry between Blur and Oasis. Blur triumphed with the single “Country House”, becoming the symbol of smart, London-based pop-rock.

Evolution and Experimentation

By the late 1990s, Blur moved away from the traditional britpop sound, experimenting with alternative rock and electronic music. Their self-titled album “Blur” (1997), featuring the global hit “Song 2”, brought them international recognition beyond the UK.

The 1999 album “13” revealed a darker, more introspective side of the band, reflecting Albarn’s breakup with Justine Frischmann of Elastica. Their following record, “Think Tank” (2003), was created without Graham Coxon and incorporated strong electronic and Middle Eastern influences.
