Анжелика Варум - Biography and discography, all albums and songs

Анжелика Варум

Angelica Varum is a singer whose career has evolved not according to the laws of the show business industry, but according to an inner logic of taste and intonation. Her music has never aimed for loud effects or aggressive relevance. Varum chose a different path — calm, observant, built on nuance, melody, and the ability to speak to the listener softly.

Angelica Varum (real name — Maria Yuryevna Varum) was born on May 26, 1969, in Lviv. She grew up in a family where music and theater were not professions but a natural environment of existence. Her father, Yuri Ignatievich Varum, was a composer and arranger; her mother, Galina Shapovalova, a theater director. It was an environment in which creativity was not divided into “work” and “everyday life” — it was simply present.

Because of her parents’ constant touring, Maria spent a significant part of her childhood with her grandmother. Later, she often noted that this period taught her to listen, observe, and not seek constant attention. These early habits are easily recognizable in her future stage manner — restrained and free of outward pressure.

Musical upbringing

Varum did not receive a formal musical education in the traditional Soviet sense. Her father deliberately refused to send his daughter to a music school, believing that a rigid academic system often suppresses individuality. Angelica studied music at home.

From an early age, she played the piano, later mastered the guitar, and began singing. During her school years, she took part in tours of a children’s theater, performing folk and pop songs. It was an experience of a live stage — without television gloss and without orientation toward format.

First steps and the beginning of public recognition

After finishing school, Angelica attempted to enroll in the Shchukin Theatre School. She did not pass the entrance exams. In later interviews, the singer mentioned that one of the reasons was her pronounced Ukrainian accent, which at that time was considered a serious obstacle for an acting career.

Remaining in Moscow, Varum began working as a backing vocalist in her father’s studio. This period became a practical school of the profession for her: she observed the recording process, arrangements, the work of musicians, and producer logic — without illusions or romanticization.

The starting point of her solo career is generally considered to be 1989, when the song “Midnight Cowboy” was aired on the television program “Morning Mail”. After this broadcast, the name Angelica Varum became recognizable to a wide audience. Large-scale concert performances followed later.

Shaping a distinctive image

In 1991, her debut album “Goodbye, My Boy” was released. It was stylistically rooted in early-1990s pop music and received a wide response from listeners. However, Varum’s truly recognizable image formed after the release of the album “La-La-Fa” in 1993.

The songs “La-La-Fa,” “Gorodok,” and “The Artist Who Paints the Rain” cemented her reputation as an artist with a light, ironic, yet precise intonation. The press nickname “Mademoiselle La-La-Fa” turned out not to be a stage persona, but a natural extension of her character.

Maturity and expansion of musical language

In the second half of the 1990s, Angelica Varum gradually moved away from straightforward pop forms. The album “Autumn Jazz” (1995) was perceived as a more intimate and mature work and received professional acclaim.

The 1996 albums — “Two Steps from Paradise” and “Winter Cherry” — firmly established Varum’s status as a romantic heroine whose songs became genuinely popular hits without losing musical aesthetics or a sense of measure.

Theater, cinema, and personal life

Despite her unsuccessful attempt to enter a theater institute, acting never disappeared from her biography. In 1997, Varum played the role of Katya in the stage production “The Emigrant’s Pose” (directed by Leonid Trushkin), appearing on a professional dramatic stage.

In 1999, she starred in the leading role in the feature film “Diamonds in the Sky”, fulfilling a long-held dream of working in cinema. However, acting never became her primary focus — music remained her main priority.

On February 9, 1999, Angelica Varum and Leonid Agutin welcomed their daughter, Elizaveta. At that time, the couple was not yet officially married. Their wedding and church ceremony took place later — in 2000 in Venice, a city that became an important part of their shared public image.

The mature period

In the 2000s, Angelica Varum gradually reduced her public activity. Her new works became more restrained and introverted, oriented not toward format but toward intonation and an inner dialogue with the listener.

This period finally secured her reputation as an artist for whom precision and longevity matter more than the frequency of releases.

A new vector: jazz and authorial lyrics

In the 2010s and 2020s, Angelica Varum’s work finally transformed toward “music not for everyone.” She stopped orienting herself toward charts, focusing instead on complex arrangements and deep lyrics.

  • The album “Woman” (2016): Recorded in the United States in collaboration with composer Igor Krutoy, this project demonstrated the singer’s vocal maturity. The record, rooted in pop jazz and lounge, received high praise abroad.

  • Collaboration with Sado Novosadović: The albums “On Pause” (2018) and especially “Sad Bossa” (2020) introduced listeners to a “new Varum.” This is melancholic, philosophical, minimalist music in which her voice sounds максимально intimate.

  • Jazz programs: In recent years, Angelica has often performed with a jazz quintet, presenting her older hits in new, sometimes unrecognizable improvisational interpretations.

This stage emphasized Varum’s status as a free artist who can afford to experiment without looking back at the commercial demands of the industry.

Angelica Varum has never sought to be “number one at any cost.” Her career contains no sharp breaks, scandals, or demonstrative relaunches. It is a path of quiet stability, in which an artist’s name retains the listener’s trust for decades.

She rarely gives interviews and prefers to speak through music. That is precisely why her songs do not age with their era — they exist slightly outside of time, remaining recognizable even today.
