Изначально, когда уже бывшие джангл-творцы уносили все на другое поле, замысел состоял в сохранении музыки, ее дальнейшем развитии, но без рагга-читки и под новым именем. Одновременно со старым, аменовским (шумным и плотным с большим количеством ударных), звучанием параллельно существовало уже тустеповое, то есть вместо сумбурного набора ударов было всего два: пумс—пустота—пумс—пустота. Отсюда и название: 2-step. Пионером тустепового звучания в драм-н-бейсе считается Alex Reece, когда выпустил на лейбле Metalheadz минималистичный джазстеп-трек “Pulp fiction” в 1995 году. В тустепе находят спасение и почти весь лейбл Голди использует его в релизах того времени.
