W&W — a Dutch DJ and producer duo consisting of Willem van Hanegem and Ward van der Harst. They are among the most influential artists on the global electronic scene, known for tracks that blend elements of trance, progressive house, and big room. Their music is characterized by epic melodies, festival energy, and powerful drops — the hallmark of their signature sound.
Early Years and Formation
Willem van Hanegem was born on August 25, 1987, in Gouda, and Ward van der Harst on December 26, 1988, in Tilburg, the Netherlands. Both were fascinated by music and electronic sound from a young age, inspired by artists like Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, and Ferry Corsten. They met in 2007 on a music forum where they exchanged demo tracks. Discovering a shared vision, they decided to collaborate — and thus, W&W was born.
Their first release, "Mustang" (2008), was an instant success, receiving support from Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, and Above & Beyond. The track was featured on the compilation "A State of Trance 2008", earning them their first international recognition.
Development and Evolution of Sound
Initially, W&W focused on uplifting trance, releasing atmospheric tracks with emotional melodies such as "Arena", "Mainstage", and "Impact". However, starting around 2012, they began integrating elements of big room and electro house into their sound, adapting to the evolving festival scene.
Their style became a unique fusion of trance-inspired melodies and heavy EDM drops, allowing them to stay connected to their roots while appealing to a broader audience. W&W were among the first to bring festival trance into the mainstream.
