DJ Maniak (real name — Yuriy Vasilyev) is a Ukrainian DJ and music producer, a representative of the Odesa club scene. He was born on March 8, 1981, in Odesa. He began his professional career in 2001, gaining recognition as a house and electro house DJ before later expanding his musical range toward progressive house, melodic house and melodic techno.
Maniak’s career has been closely associated with the Odesa clubs Atlantis, Yo, Riviera and Ibiza, Kyiv’s Barsky Club, joint performances with MC Rybik and the Black & White radio show on Kiss FM Ukraine. In 2006 and 2008, he won the Odesa DJ competition held as part of the Light. Sound. Stage exhibition, and in 2010 he received an Odessa Entertainment Awards honor.
Early career
Yuriy Vasilyev was born in Odesa in 1981. Before beginning his professional DJ career, he was associated with the dance crew Discomaniax.
His involvement with Discomaniax became one of the factors that pushed him toward working with club music. The stage name Maniak is also connected with the name of the crew: within the club scene, its members were referred to as “maniacs.”
In 2001, Vasilyev began working professionally as a DJ and became a resident of the Odesa nightclub Atlantis. In the following years, he performed at Kosmo, Nirvana, Ra, Faktura, Stereo and other venues in Odesa.
This period coincided with the rapid development of the Ukrainian club scene in the early 2000s, while house and its more energetic variations formed the basis of Maniak’s repertoire.
Odesa club scene
By the mid-2000s, DJ Maniak was appearing regularly on the lineups of major Odesa clubs and summer venues. Over the years, he was associated with Riviera, Yo and Ibiza, while also performing as a guest DJ at other venues across the city.
In 2006, Maniak won the Best DJ of Odessa competition, held as part of the specialized Light. Sound. Stage exhibition. In 2008, he won the competition again.
During the same period, DJ Maniak was also named “Best DJ — 2008” by the Odesa entertainment portal STAKAN.
These awards reflected Vasilyev’s prominent position on the Odesa club scene in the second half of the 2000s, when house and electro house were among the dominant styles in Ukrainian club music.
Kyiv and Barsky Club
In early 2009, DJ Maniak moved to Kyiv and became a resident of Barsky Club.
At the same time, he continued touring and performing at other venues in the Ukrainian capital, including PaTiPa. Surviving recordings and club mixes from this period document joint performances by Maniak and MC Rybik, who became one of his regular stage partners.
Later, his touring history expanded to include performances at AURA, Heaven, Dante, SkyBar and D.Lux, while his connection with the Odesa club scene remained intact.
Black & White on Kiss FM
One of DJ Maniak’s most notable media projects was the radio show Black & White, which he hosted together with DJ Tommy Lee.
The show aired on the Ukrainian dance radio station Kiss FM Ukraine. The station’s archive preserves numerous episodes of Black & White with Maniak and Tommy Lee from the first half of the 2010s.
The project followed a DJ mix-show format and featured contemporary club music of the period — primarily house, electro house and related dance styles.
At the same time, Maniak continued performing in clubs and maintaining an active touring schedule.

In 2010, DJ Maniak received an Odessa Entertainment Awards honor in the “Best DJ” category.

Luxury Music
In 2013, DJ Maniak began appearing in club lineups and professional materials as a resident of Luxury Music.
This period was accompanied by intensive touring. Maniak performed not only in Odesa and Kyiv, but also in other Ukrainian cities and abroad, continuing to work primarily with dance-oriented club music.
Original music and remixes
In addition to DJing, Maniak works as a music producer and releases his own tracks, remixes and edits.
His catalogue includes both solo productions and collaborative projects. Recordings with other Ukrainian artists and numerous live mixes with MC Rybik occupy a separate place in his body of work.
In the 2020s, Maniak continued releasing music. Among his officially listed Beatport releases is 17, a collaboration with Akram released on Aorta Records.
During the same period, he also released collaborations and remixes with Shnaps, including versions of Bloody Mary by Lady Gaga and It Goes Like (Nanana) by Peggy Gou.
Evolution of musical style
The foundation of DJ Maniak’s early style was house and electro house — genres that defined a significant part of Ukraine’s commercial club scene in the mid-to-late 2000s.
Over time, his musical selection evolved along with the club industry. In later sets, house was joined by progressive house, melodic house and melodic techno.
This development can be clearly traced through Maniak’s own mixes: while his earlier recordings were focused primarily on electro house and energetic vocal house, his 2020s material incorporates a deeper and more melodic electronic sound.
MC Rybik
A significant part of DJ Maniak’s club history is connected with MC Rybik. The DJ + MC duo regularly performed at clubs and events, while recordings of their joint sets were circulating online as early as the late 2000s.
Surviving recordings include performances from Barsky Club, Odesa’s Ibiza, SkyBar, Park Residence, Fanconi Rivera and other venues.
The collaboration continued for many years after their first joint performances.
Move to the United States and work in Miami
In the early 2020s, an American chapter began in DJ Maniak’s career. He was already performing in the United States with MC Rybik in 2022, and by 2024 Yuriy Vasilyev had moved to the United States and settled in Miami, Florida. Miami became the artist’s main base and the starting point for his further work on the American club scene.
After relocating, Maniak expanded the geography of his performances across the United States. In addition to Miami and other cities in Florida, his touring route came to include New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, Orlando and Cincinnati. According to the DJ himself, one of the main goals of this period was to establish himself in the American market and further develop his own music brand.
In Miami, Vasilyev worked as a DJ at Porterhouse MIA and later became its art director, taking responsibility for the venue’s musical concept, artist bookings and event programming. He also performed at events in various states, including VSE SVOI projects, while continuing his work on the Miami club scene.
The American stage of his career expanded beyond his own performances. In Miami, Vasilyev founded Moneyphestor DJ School, focused on practical training for aspiring DJs, and also develops the club project The Vibe US. As a result, his activities in the United States include not only DJing and music production, but also event organization, music curation and education.
Significance
DJ Maniak belongs to the generation of Ukrainian DJs whose professional careers were shaped during the rapid development of the country’s club industry in the early 2000s.
Beginning with Odesa’s Atlantis, he went through the era of club residencies, the rise of house and electro house, the Kyiv stage of his career, Kiss FM radio broadcasts and the subsequent transformation of the electronic music scene.
His victories in Odesa DJ competitions, work at prominent clubs in Odesa and Kyiv, the Black & White radio show and his long-running collaboration with MC Rybik form the key stages of his professional biography.
