Maxim Alexandrovich Galkin is a stage performer, parodist, comedian and television presenter. He was born on 18 June 1976 in the Moscow Region. He gained widespread recognition in the late 1990s and early 2000s through political and entertainment parodies, solo comedy programmes and television work. One of the defining projects of his television career was the game show «Кто хочет стать миллионером?», which Galkin hosted on Channel One from 2001 to 2008.
He later worked on major entertainment formats including «Танцы со звёздами», «Десять миллионов», «МаксимМаксим», «Лучше всех!» and «Сегодня вечером». Unlike a conventional stand-up or spoken-word comedian, Galkin builds his performances around a combination of parody, improvisation, observations, musical numbers and direct interaction with the audience.
Family and childhood
Maxim’s father, Alexander Alexandrovich Galkin, was a colonel general of the armoured forces. From 1987, he headed the Main Armoured Directorate of the USSR Ministry of Defence, and after its reorganisation he led the Main Automotive-Armoured Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defence until November 1996. He later served as a deputy of the State Duma.
His mother, Natalia Grigoryevna Galkina, held a Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences degree and worked as a senior researcher at the International Institute of Earthquake Prediction Theory and Mathematical Geophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Because of his father’s military service, the family moved frequently. Maxim spent part of his childhood in East Germany, later studied in Odesa, after which the family lived in Buryatia near Ulan-Ude before eventually returning to Moscow.
His talent for parody emerged while he was still at school. Galkin imitated teachers and classmates, and in the sixth grade staged a puppet show in which he voiced all the characters himself using different voices. Channel One later recalled this episode as one of the first public demonstrations of his performing abilities.
Education
In 1993, Galkin graduated from Moscow Gymnasium No. 1543 and entered the Russian State University for the Humanities, Faculty of Linguistics. He received his higher education degree in 1998 and continued into postgraduate studies.
His academic work focused on the stylistics of translation. During his postgraduate studies, Galkin researched the relationship between the stylistic systems of original and translated texts, including Russian translations of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust. He did not defend a Candidate of Sciences dissertation.
His linguistic education did not remain an isolated episode in his biography. Work with speech, intonation, accents and vocal characteristics became Galkin’s main professional tools as a parodist.
First performances
His stage debut took place in April 1994 at the Student Theatre of Moscow State University. Galkin performed parodies in the production «Фонтаны любви к ближнему». He later appeared in «Кабаре 03», and in June of the same year took part in the Moscow Estrada Theatre programme «Дебюты, дебюты, дебюты».
Political figures occupied an important place in his early repertoire. Galkin reproduced the characteristic speech and mannerisms of Boris Yeltsin, Vladimir Zhirinovsky and other public figures. Gradually, his range of characters expanded to include performers, television presenters and representatives of show business.
At one of his performances, the young parodist was noticed by the artistic director of the Moscow Estrada Theatre, Boris Brunov. Galkin began performing professionally on the variety stage, and in the late 1990s started collaborating with Mikhail Zadornov, with whom he toured the country for about a year and a half.
Transition to a solo career
By the turn of the 1990s and 2000s, Galkin was already perceived not only as a participant in ensemble comedy concerts, but also as an independent performer.
In 2001, he received a grant from the independent «Triumph» award and the «Golden Ostap» prize. In the summer of the same year, his first major solo concert took place at the «Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk» festival, after which solo programmes became a permanent part of his career.
In his performances, Galkin gradually moved beyond the traditional parody format. Alongside accurate reproductions of famous voices, his programmes began to include monologues, improvisation, musical numbers and observations on television language, politics and mass culture.
«Кто хочет стать миллионером?»
His major television breakthrough came in 2001.
On 19 February, Channel One launched the Russian version of the international game show «Кто хочет стать миллионером?», with Maxim Galkin as host. Before that, the format had aired on NTV under the title «О, счастливчик!» and was hosted by Dmitry Dibrov.
For Galkin, the programme marked an important transition from stage comedian to professional television host. Unlike a solo concert, the format required him to work with non-professional contestants, maintain the tension of the game and improvise within a strictly defined television structure.
Galkin remained the host of «Кто хочет стать миллионером?» until 2008. Over seven years, the programme became one of the television shows most strongly associated with his name.
Work on Channel One
The success of the game show led to numerous new projects.
During the 2000s, Galkin hosted «Новые песни о главном», special editions of popular programmes and music shows. In 2007, together with Alla Pugacheva, he co-hosted the television project «Две звезды».
A defining feature of his television style was the ability to switch between several roles: host, parodist, musical performer and improviser. In holiday specials and concerts, he often became a character within his own parody numbers, changing voices and images directly within a single performance.
Period on Rossiya 1
In 2008, Galkin ended his regular work on Channel One and moved to Rossiya / Rossiya 1.
There he hosted «Звёздный лёд», followed by several seasons of «Танцы со звёздами», as well as «Кто хочет стать Максимом Галкиным?», «Стиляги-шоу», «Добрый вечер с Максимом» and New Year entertainment programmes.
On 4 September 2010, the game show «Десять миллионов» premiered — the Russian adaptation of the British format The Million Pound Drop. Contestants received the money at the beginning of the game and had to preserve it by answering questions. Galkin once again became the host of a major intellectual entertainment format, this time on a different television channel.
His period on Rossiya 1 lasted several years and demonstrated that his television career did not depend on any single project or channel.
Return to Channel One
In the mid-2010s, Galkin once again began working actively with Channel One.
In 2016, he launched his own entertainment show «МаксимМаксим», built around sketches, musical numbers, parodies and invited guests.
That same year, «Лучше всех!» premiered — a programme featuring children with unusual talents and interests. The format differed significantly from Galkin’s previous work: instead of parody or intellectual competition, its central element was direct interaction between the host and the child.
In 2017, Maxim Galkin received a TEFI Award for «Лучше всех!» as Best Entertainment Programme Host. At the same ceremony, the show’s producer Ilya Krivitsky was named the best television producer of the season.
After Andrey Malakhov left Channel One, Galkin also became one of the hosts of the Saturday programme «Сегодня вечером».
By the end of the 2010s, his television biography therefore included game shows, talent programmes, music shows, comedy projects and major studio talk shows.
Music
Although Galkin has performed as a singer on many occasions, an independent recording career has never been the main direction of his work.
His best-known early musical recording is the duet with Alla Pugacheva, «Будь или не будь», included on her album «Речной трамвайчик». The song dates from 2001; both the music and lyrics were written by Lyubasha — Tatiana Zaluzhnaya.
Music was much more often incorporated directly into Galkin’s concert and television programmes: he parodied the performing styles of famous singers, performed pop numbers and used singing as part of the comic structure of his shows.
In 2020, the single «Лайков не будет» was also released. Yet even taking these individual recordings into account, the basis of his professional identity remains parody, comedy and stage performance rather than an independent pop discography.
Alla Pugacheva
Maxim Galkin and Alla Pugacheva met in 2001. Their acquaintance is usually associated with the «Slavianski Bazaar» festival in Vitebsk; their relationship began in the same year.
On 23 December 2011, they officially registered their marriage in Moscow. By that point, their relationship had already lasted for about ten years.
On 18 September 2013, the couple became parents to twins — Elizaveta and Harry. The children were born via a surrogate mother.
For many years, the family life of Galkin and Pugacheva remained closely connected with public culture: they appeared together in television programmes, concerts and music projects, while Galkin maintained an independent career as a television presenter and comedian.
After 2022
After the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Galkin publicly spoke out against the war. Soon afterwards, he left Russia with his family, and the main focus of his concert activity shifted abroad. In Israel, the artist also stated that he would donate part of the proceeds from his concerts to support Ukrainian refugees.
This period significantly changed the professional model of his career. Whereas his public profile had previously been based on Russian federal television combined with touring, after 2022 the central format became independent international concerts.
His concert programmes retained the parodies and musical numbers traditionally associated with Galkin, but authorial monologues and topical satire became noticeably more prominent.
The artist’s official concert platform continues to announce international tours; in 2026, Galkin is performing a jubilee world tour marking his 50th birthday.
Foreign agent status in Russia
On 16 September 2022, the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation added Maxim Galkin to its register of foreign agents. The official Ministry of Justice entry states that he spoke out against Russia’s «special military operation» in Ukraine; the ministry also lists other allegations using its own official wording.
Galkin attempted to challenge the decision in Russian courts but was unable to secure removal from the register. As of 2026, his entry remains in the active Ministry of Justice register, and the corresponding designation is also displayed on the artist’s official website.
For his biography, this status is important primarily as a dividing line after which his long-running work on Russian federal television ended and the geography of his concert activity changed.
Stage style
Parody remains the foundation of Maxim Galkin’s work, but his method goes beyond simply copying a voice.
In his performances, he reproduces the intonation, pace of speech, vocabulary, gestures and characteristic speech habits of a particular person. The character usually becomes the basis for a broader satirical scene, which is why many of his parodies continue to work even after the original political or television context is no longer current.
The second important element is improvisation. In his solo programmes, Galkin actively interacts with the audience, responds to comments from spectators and restructures parts of the material directly during the concert.
Musical parodies allow him to use another aspect of his technique: changing timbre, vocal delivery and performance style. As a result, his concerts exist at the intersection of stand-up, stage parody, musical show and spoken satire.
Awards
Maxim Galkin’s professional awards include the «Triumph» and «Golden Ostap» prizes, both received in 2001. In 2006, he was awarded Russia’s Order of Friendship.
In 2017, Galkin received a TEFI Award in the entertainment programme host category for his work on «Лучше всех!».

Maxim Galkin’s career developed at the intersection of two traditions — stage parody and large-scale entertainment television. In the 1990s, he began with political and celebrity impressions; in the 2000s, he became the host of major television formats; and later he expanded his stage language through musical numbers, improvisation and extended solo programmes.
After the end of his work on Russian federal television, his professional activity once again became centred around the format with which his career had begun — direct performance in front of an audience. International touring effectively made the solo concert the main space for Galkin’s parodies, satire, music and new original material.
