Leprikonsy is a Belarusian rock band formed in Minsk on September 1, 1996. The founder, vocalist and principal songwriter is Ilya Mitko. At different stages, the band’s music has combined punk rock, pop punk, ska, garage rock, pop and folk elements. Leprikonsy became best known for the song «Хали-гали, паратрупер», one of the most recognizable Russian-language pop-rock hits of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Other well-known songs include «Девчонки полюбили не меня», «Все ребята перцы!», «Тополя», «Москвич», «Дискотека», «Городок», «Студенты» and «Вовочка».
The history of Leprikonsy was not limited to the success of a single hit. The band continued recording albums, toured extensively, changed its lineup and musical format several times, yet retained its characteristic combination of guitars, brass, accordion and Ilya Mitko’s ironic songwriting style. The group remains active three decades after its formation: its official website continues to accept concert bookings, while the digital catalog was still being expanded with new releases in 2025–2026.
Ilya Mitko and the formation of the band
Ilya Mitko was born on April 6, 1981. He became interested in music while still at school. Before Leprikonsy, Mitko was the vocalist of the Minsk punk band Kindergarten, whose repertoire included covers of Nirvana and Green Day. He later decided to form his own group.
In the summer of 1996, Mitko teamed up with his friend Vladimir Fedoruk. The musicians lived in the same Minsk neighborhood and began assembling the first lineup from among their acquaintances. The official founding date is considered to be September 1, 1996. The project was originally called «Леприкон» and had a considerably heavier sound, with the musicians focusing on hardcore and punk rock.
The first period was spent in the Minsk underground scene. The band played clubs, the lineup changed constantly, and a stable musical formula had not yet emerged.
«Детки» and the arrival of the accordion
In 1997, the musicians recorded the demo cassette «Детки». The run was almost symbolic — around twenty copies, of which approximately half were distributed.
One of the most important changes in the band’s sound happened at the same time. Vladimir Fedoruk, who had originally played bass guitar, switched to the accordion, an instrument he knew from music school. The accordion immediately distinguished the band from the many post-punk and alternative acts in Minsk and later became one of the characteristic features of Leprikonsy’s music.
At the same time, Ilya Mitko began moving away from English-language hardcore in favor of Russian-language songs. The music became lighter, brass instruments appeared, choruses became simpler, and grotesque everyday stories became part of the lyrics.
«Человек идёт и улыбается…»
The band’s first full-length material was recorded under the title «Человек идёт и улыбается…». In the current digital catalog, the album is dated September 1, 1997 and contains 13 tracks, including «Ну и что», «Аккордеон», «Военнообязанный», «Птица», «Звёздная болезнь», «Ванька-встанька» and the title track.
This period still sounds noticeably different from the later Leprikonsy. Punk and garage rock are more prominent, while the future mixture of pop melody, ska, brass and accordion is only beginning to take shape.
«Хали-гали, паратрупер»
The most important song in the band’s history appeared in the late 1990s. «Хали-гали, паратрупер» was written by Ilya Mitko and entered radio rotation before Leprikonsy had fully established themselves on the major Russian market.
The chorus title is connected with rides at a Minsk amusement park: «Хали-гали», «Паратрупер» and Super 8 were names of attractions. The song itself is structured as a story of the protagonist growing up — from a childhood date to an adult relationship.
The song quickly became popular on radio and made the band known far beyond Belarus. In 1999, Leprikonsy signed a contract with the Soyuz studio, after which a period of intensive touring, television appearances and major festivals began. In 2000, the band performed at the Nashestvie festival, opening the second day of the program.
«Нам с тобою было супер»
The album «Нам с тобою было супер» was released in 1999. In the Apple Music digital catalog, the release is dated April 3 and contains 12 tracks. This album is closely associated with the period of Leprikonsy’s greatest mainstream popularity.
«Хали-гали, паратрупер» remains the main track, but the album is not limited to a single hit. It also includes «Москвич», «Лена», «Она-одна», «Липа-облепиха», «Аккордеон» and other songs.
By this time, the band’s signature style had fully taken shape: fast guitars and danceable rhythms coexisted with accordion and brass, while the seriousness of the rock performance was constantly undercut by deliberately simple lyrics, street slang and self-irony.
«Все ребята перцы!»
The next major studio album, «Все ребята перцы!», was released in 2001. It contains 13 songs: «Девчонки полюбили не меня», the title track «Все ребята перцы!», «Тополя», «Малая-е», «Хэй-хо», «Черноглазая блондинка», «Я ещё смогу», «Надоело», «Минск — Москва» and others.
«Девчонки полюбили не меня» and «Тополя» became some of the band’s best-known songs after «Хали-гали». The album continued Mitko’s characteristic use of teenage memories, neighborhood culture and an intentionally unserious view of romantic relationships.
«…ля Тополя!»
Also in 2001, «…ля Тополя!» appeared. Unlike the numbered studio records, it is a live album. It was presented in November 2001. The program includes live versions of «Лена», «Москвич», «Тополя», «Девчонки полюбили не меня», «Хали-гали, паратрупер», «Все ребята перцы!» and other songs.
«С Запада На Восток»
In March 2003, Leprikonsy released the album «С Запада На Восток». It includes «Ты, как цветочек», «Дискотека», «Домой», «Городок», «Вредные привычки», «Море», «Настя», «Засыпай» and a version of «Расскажи, Снегурочка».
Compared with the records from the band’s breakthrough period, the album sounded less punk-oriented and approached pop, ska and mainstream entertainment music more freely. The group was no longer trying to recreate «Хали-гали», instead expanding its concert repertoire.
«Без Даты»
The next full-length album, «Без Даты», was released on April 1, 2007. It includes «Негодяй», «Не гони», «Дзед-барадзед», «Не пара», «Яблоки на снегу», «Солдаты», «Русские на отдыхе», «Вовочка», «Пиво» and «Студенты».
By the mid-2000s, Leprikonsy existed primarily as a stable touring band with a large catalog. New songs appeared in concert programs alongside the hits of the late 1990s, which by then had become the foundation of the group’s public recognition.
«Десятилетка»
In 2010, the release «Десятилетка» appeared. Despite its title and retrospective anniversary concept, this was not simply a conventional compilation of old recordings. The band revisited material from different periods, bringing together updated versions of key songs on one release.
The recording featured Ilya Mitko, Vladimir Fedoruk, Kirill Kanyushik, Alexander Lipnitsky, Dmitry Demidov, Pyotr Martinkevich, Dmitry Naidenovich and other musicians. The track list included «Хали-гали, паратрупер», «Тополя», «Девчонки полюбили не меня», «Дискотека», «Городок» and other songs.
Work with Vadim Galygin
A separate chapter in the band’s history was its work with Belarusian comedian Vadim Galygin. In 2011, they released the collaborative album «Подарок», on which Galygin wrote and performed much of the material, while Leprikonsy provided the musical foundation of the project.
The album included «Купе», «По проводам», «Только ты», «Russian Models», «Птица счастья», «Регги», «Танго», «Красота», «Любовь такая разная» and «Гуси-лебеди». The original version was released in 2011; digital services later received an updated edition.
The collaboration was a natural one: Galygin and Leprikonsy came from closely related Belarusian entertainment circles and were equally comfortable combining music with comic delivery.
Kvartirnik at Margulis
In April 2019, Leprikonsy appeared on the television program «Квартирник НТВ у Маргулиса». During the episode, the band performed its best-known songs, while Ilya Mitko spoke about his early groups, the origins of Leprikonsy and the story of their success. Vadim Galygin also took part in the program.
«Карамельный йод xo»
After a long period during which the band was more strongly associated with concerts and its earlier catalog, the album «Карамельный йод xo» appeared on digital platforms on April 18, 2023.
Its songs include «Закружила, завертела», «А мне бы в детство», «Железный дровосек», «И до свидания» and «Папка не пей». Ilya Mitko is credited as the songwriter in the official digital credits.
The album showed that Leprikonsy had not limited themselves to nostalgic concerts. Mitko continued writing new material, retaining everyday humor and an interest in character-driven songs, but now from the perspective of an adult and a father.
A new life for «Хали-гали»
The band’s biggest hit continues to return in new versions. On July 4, 2025, «Хали-гали, паратрупер (Dmitrii G & DeepSummer Remix)» was officially released. Ilya Mitko remains credited as the author of the original composition.
Such reissues underline the song’s unusual longevity: «Хали-гали, паратрупер» continues to exist independently of the era in which it was recorded and remains the band’s most recognizable work.
Leprikonsy in 2026
The group continues to perform live. On its official website, Leprikonsy is presented as an active band available for concerts, festivals and other performances.
On April 10, 2026, the single Winter Ahead appeared in the digital catalog. This confirms that the band’s discography is still being expanded nearly thirty years after its formation.
Ilya Mitko
Ilya Mitko has remained the central figure of Leprikonsy since the band was founded. He is the vocalist, guitarist and author of most of the repertoire.
His songwriting style is based on the combination of very simple conversational language and a strong melodic chorus. Mitko often uses characters, memories of adolescence, neighborhood expressions, everyday situations and deliberately absurd details. At the same time, the comic element never replaces melody: this is why many of the band’s songs are recognizable from their opening lines or main musical phrase.
In the early period, the humor was focused mainly on teenage culture and relationships; later, the lyrics increasingly dealt with growing older, family life, alcohol, nostalgia and self-irony.
Musical style
The most accurate basic description of Leprikonsy’s music remains pop punk, although the band’s discography is considerably broader than a single genre.
The early recordings contain stronger punk and garage-rock elements. After the addition of accordion and brass, the band began combining them with ska, pop and folk influences. Individual songs also include elements of disco, chanson, reggae and traditional pop entertainment music.
The accordion became a particularly important distinguishing feature. In most rock bands of the late 1990s it would have sounded stylistically out of place, whereas Leprikonsy made it part of the core rhythmic and melodic structure.
The brass section strengthened the connection with ska, while simple guitar parts preserved punk directness. As a result, the same songs could work at a rock festival, on pop radio or at a student disco.
Humor without becoming a comedy project
Leprikonsy are often perceived as a humorous band, but musically the project was never simply a parody. Ilya Mitko’s irony exists within a conventional song form rather than replacing it.
«Хали-гали, паратрупер» is a complete pop song about growing up and relationships. «Все ребята перцы!» is built around childhood neighborhood slang. «Девчонки полюбили не меня» uses the self-irony of an unlucky protagonist. In «Студенты», student life itself becomes the subject.
It was precisely this combination of accessible melody and lyrics that never try to make their characters seem more serious than they are that shaped the band’s most recognizable side.
Lineup
Over the decades, a large number of musicians have passed through Leprikonsy. Alongside Ilya Mitko, one of the key figures in the band’s early and later history was Vladimir Fedoruk, whose switch to accordion introduced the instrument into the group’s sound.
At different times, the band also included bassist Kirill Kanyushik, drummer Alexander Lipnitsky, trumpeter Pyotr Martinkevich, trombonist Dmitry Naidenovich and other musicians. Because of the many lineup changes, it would be inaccurate to describe the group as having a permanently fixed set of members; Ilya Mitko remains the constant leader and principal songwriter.

Leprikonsy established their own place in Belarusian and Russian-language music of the late 1990s and early 2000s without fully belonging either to the rock scene or to mainstream pop. One enormous hit opened the way to a mass audience, but the band’s history proved far longer than «Хали-гали»: Ilya Mitko kept the group alive, continued writing songs and, three decades later, never allowed Leprikonsy to become exclusively a nostalgia act.
