Kaeyra is the stage name of American singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Caroline Baran. She was born in the United States into a family of Polish origin and began performing professionally while still in her teens. Her career combines original pop music, work with Postmodern Jukebox, appearances on the television competitions America’s Got Talent and American Idol, and collaboration with Warner Music Poland.
Early years
Caroline Baran grew up in a musical family in Illinois. Her mother taught piano and ran the ABC Music Academy. Caroline began studying there at around the age of six, learning piano, guitar, flute and drums. She later focused on vocals and bass guitar.
As a teenager, Baran performed in local bands. She was the vocalist of Caroline & the Priority, while in Profusion she combined singing with playing bass guitar. Both projects took part in American competitions for young performers. This period shaped her as a live singer and instrumentalist before the beginning of her solo career.
The stage name Kaeyra appeared during the second half of the 2010s. Under this name, the singer began releasing original material and separated her solo work from her earlier band projects.
Postmodern Jukebox
In 2016, Kaeyra took part in an online audition for Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, a project specialising in reimagining contemporary songs in the styles of jazz, soul and popular music from previous decades.
She recorded versions of the following songs with the project:
- Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper;
- Nothing Else Matters by Metallica;
- In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins;
- Love on the Brain by Rihanna.
The recording of Nothing Else Matters was made in 2017 and later became part of Postmodern Jukebox’s live repertoire. Working with the project allowed Kaeyra to demonstrate a different vocal approach from the one heard in her own pop music: freer phrasing, jazz-inflected intonation and a stronger emphasis on live ensemble performance.
Fountains of Gold
On August 25, 2017, Kaeyra released her first studio album, Fountains of Gold. The record consists of seven songs with a total running time of approximately 24 minutes and was released independently. Apple Music classifies the release as pop.
The album represents the singer’s early period as a songwriter. Its material differs from her later radio-oriented singles through more intimate arrangements and a noticeable influence from alternative pop and soul. Even at this stage, Kaeyra was working not only as a performer but also as the writer of her own repertoire.
The existence of Fountains of Gold is important for understanding her career: television shows did not mark the beginning of her musical activity, but continued a solo career that was already established.
America’s Got Talent
In 2018, Kaeyra appeared in the thirteenth season of America’s Got Talent. During her audition, she received positive votes from all four judges. By that time, she already had experience performing with bands, recording with Postmodern Jukebox and releasing an album of original material.
Her appearance on the program introduced the singer to a wider television audience, although she continued to develop her career independently after the show, performing and recording new material.
The 11:11 EP
On May 11, 2021, Kaeyra released the EP 11:11. The release contains six tracks and is associated with R&B and soul. It includes All I Know featuring Caye, Eat, Forget His Name, Trouble, Bloodstream and other songs.
11:11 marked a transition from her earlier singer-songwriter pop towards more contemporary material based on R&B rhythms, electronic production and concise vocal forms. Unlike the retro arrangements of Postmodern Jukebox, the emphasis here was placed on modern studio production and original songwriting.
During the same period, Kaeyra contributed to recordings by other electronic and pop artists. These collaborations included Heart Ain’t Safe with Callie Reiff and All I Know with Caye.
Lollapalooza
In 2022, Kaeyra performed at the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago. For the singer, it became one of her most notable live appearances before taking part in American Idol. The performance also highlighted her connection with Chicago’s music scene, where the early years of her career took place.
American Idol
In 2023, Kaeyra became a contestant on the twenty-first season of American Idol. At her audition, she performed Chris Stapleton’s song Cold while accompanying herself on piano and received the judges’ support.
During the Showstopper round, the singer performed River by British artist Bishop Briggs while playing bass guitar. The song is sometimes mistakenly associated with Joni Mitchell’s composition of the same name, but the performance featured the Bishop Briggs track.
Kaeyra reached the season’s Top 20. During that stage, she performed Lewis Capaldi’s Bruises, combining vocals with piano accompaniment. She left the competition after this round, before the Top 12 was formed.
American Idol expanded her audience, but it was not the starting point of her career. By 2023, Kaeyra had already spent more than a decade performing, recording music and taking part in professional projects.
Lover and Put Me First
After American Idol, Kaeyra released the independent single Put Me First. The track was issued on August 21, 2023, through Kaeyra Music with distribution by Venice Music.
That same year, the singer recorded the track Lover with Polish DJ and producer Gromee. The collaboration strengthened her connection with the Polish music market and preceded the beginning of her work with Warner Music Poland.
Warner Music Poland period
In 2024, Kaeyra began working with Warner Music Poland. The first notable release of this new period was the single Sour, issued on July 19. The song was designed for a contemporary radio pop format and became one of the most in-demand tracks in her catalogue.
Unlike her earlier jazz covers and the R&B material on 11:11, Sour is built around a compact pop structure: a prominent chorus, an electronic rhythm section and a more restrained vocal arrangement. An acoustic version of the song was released later.
At the end of 2024, the singer also presented her original holiday song Christmas With Me and a version of Last Christmas.
Releases from 2025 to 2026
In March 2025, Kaeyra released the single Kiss Kiss. It was followed by Keep Dreaming and Other Side of Heartbreak. All three tracks continued the pop direction of her Warner Music Poland period.
Keep Dreaming, released on August 20, 2025, combines electronic production with a more open vocal performance and a clearly defined climax. The release was issued by Warner Music Poland.
In 2026, Kaeyra released the single Upgrade and recorded the song Szkoda na to łez with Polish singer Hania Kuzimowicz. The latter became the first notable Polish-language release in her current discography.
Musical style
Kaeyra’s work cannot be reduced to a single genre. Several distinct directions can be identified within her discography.
The album Fountains of Gold belongs to singer-songwriter pop with elements of alternative music. Her recordings with Postmodern Jukebox are based on jazz, soul and retro pop. The EP 11:11 is closer to contemporary R&B, while the singles Sour, Kiss Kiss, Keep Dreaming and Upgrade are oriented towards a current pop sound.
The singer’s primary instrument remains her voice, although her stage identity is closely connected with the piano and bass guitar. She used both instruments during television appearances and live performances, distinguishing her from singers who work exclusively with prepared backing tracks.
Kaeyra’s vocal style is built around a strong lower register, controlled dynamics and transitions from restrained verses to more intense choruses. In jazz and soul arrangements, she more often uses freer phrasing, while in pop singles she follows a more compact and rhythmically precise approach.
