Gilles Luka - Biography and discography, all albums and songs

Gilles Luka

Gilles Luka is a French singer, songwriter, composer, music producer and multi-instrumentalist. His real name is Gilles Fahy. The musician was born on 30 April 1977 in the Var department in southern France. He is best known as the vocalist of the project Galleon, the performer of the hit So I Begin, one of the key members of the electronic group Ocean Drive and, later, the creator of the project Colorblast.

Gilles Luka’s career spans several fields at once. He has released French-language pop music, worked in genres including French house, electro-pop and dance, written material for other performers, created television themes, taken part in advertising projects and produced remixes. As a result, his name appears not only on the covers of his own releases, but also in the songwriting and production credits of other artists.

One of the defining features of his creative career is his ability to return repeatedly to contemporary electronic music under a new name. In the early 2000s, his voice was associated with Galleon; by the end of the decade, with Ocean Drive; and in later years, the musician developed both his solo career and the Colorblast project.

Childhood in a musical family

Gilles Luka grew up in a family with close ties to music. His mother performed jazz, while his father played double bass. Music was therefore not perceived by the future artist as a separate hobby, but as a natural part of everyday life.

Exposure to different styles — from jazz and live instrumental music to pop songs and the electronic scene — later influenced his own approach to production. Even in club-oriented tracks, Luka generally pays close attention to melody, the vocal line and traditional song structure.

At the beginning of his professional career, he did not limit himself to electronic music. His earliest songs were closer to French chanson-pop and pop-rock. The artist later began combining the French songwriting tradition with club rhythms, synthesisers and English-language vocals.

The beginning of his professional career

In the early 2000s, Gilles Fahy arrived in Paris with his own demo recordings. One of his first notable solo releases was the song Tout ou rien, which appeared around 2000–2001. It was followed by Bien plus important.

This period shows that the performer initially intended to develop as a French-language pop singer. Electronic music was already among his interests, but it had not yet become his main direction. The turning point came after he met musicians and producers working within the rapidly developing French house scene.

The stage name Gilles Luka gradually separated the solo artist from his early releases, which sometimes used his real surname, Fahy. This was the name that later appeared on his solo records, television work and international collaborations.

Galleon and the international success of So I Begin

The major breakthrough in the musician’s career came through the project Galleon. Marseille-based producers Michel Fages and Philippe Laurent took part in its creation, while Gilles Fahy became the group’s vocalist and one of its songwriters.

In 2001, Galleon released their debut single So I Begin. The track combined a steady house rhythm, elements of disco and funk, a processed guitar part and high-pitched male vocals. Its sound reflected the European French touch wave while retaining a complete pop structure and an immediately memorable chorus.

So I Begin entered the French Top 10, received international airplay and became one of the most notable French dance singles of the period. In France’s year-end singles sales ranking for 2001, the track placed at number 38. The French organisation SNEP also awarded the single a gold certification.

Its success was not limited to France. So I Begin charted in Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom. The music video, featuring model Jitka Ogurekova, gave the release additional visual recognition.

The song was written by Michel Fages, Philippe Laurent and Gilles Fahy. Luka therefore contributed to Galleon’s defining hit not only as its vocalist, but also as a songwriter.

The Galleon album and subsequent singles

Following So I Begin, the project released the single I Believe, followed by One Sign and The Way. I Believe did not match the debut’s performance in France, but achieved notable success in Wallonia, where it reached the upper part of the chart.

In 2002, the self-titled album Galleon was released. In addition to the main singles, it included Shining Light, The Best World, Each Day, Angel Wings, Ghost Ship and Freedom to Move. The latter was used in a Levi’s advertising campaign.

The album reached number 54 in France and also appeared on the Swiss chart. Although it remained the only full-length studio album from Galleon’s classic period, it secured the project a place in the history of early-2000s European electronic music.

After Galleon’s most active period came to an end, Gilles Luka continued to work independently. Unlike many vocalists from short-lived dance projects, he managed to maintain a career as a songwriter and producer, before achieving commercial success again several years later with another group.

Work with other artists

Between his own releases, Gilles Luka became increasingly involved in studio work. He contributed to the creation of songs, arrangements and recordings for other performers, working as a producer, instrumentalist and sound engineer.

One notable collaboration was with British singer and actor Murray Head. On the album Rien n’est écrit, released in 2008, Luka contributed to songwriting, production, instrumental recording and backing vocals. He is credited, in particular, as one of the writers of Never Too Late to Change.

During the same period, he worked with French singer Nâdiya on the album Électron libre. Gilles Luka was among the producers involved in the project, which was associated with a more electronic and internationally oriented sound for the performer.

Nâdiya’s song J’irai jusque-là is based on Luka’s composition Just Because You Lied. This is an example of how his English-language songwriting material could be given a new life within French pop music.

His other international work includes a collaboration with Sergey Lazarev. The French songwriter and producer contributed material to the album Lazarev. and recorded the song Desire with the singer. Lazarev himself described Luka as a well-known French producer and a member of Ocean Drive.

First solo album: 80:08

Alongside his work for other artists, Gilles Luka returned to his own solo material. His first full-length album was titled 80:08.

The release appeared around the turn of 2007 and 2008: French catalogues list December 2007, while some later publications refer to 2008. For a long-term biography, the most accurate wording is “at the end of 2007”, taking into account that the album’s wider promotion continued into 2008.

The album included 12 English-language tracks:

  • Just Because You Lied;
  • Asylum;
  • Kill Shout;
  • Silver Day;
  • No One;
  • Time After Time;
  • Golden Eye;
  • 80:08;
  • Solitary Share;
  • Lifetime;
  • Traffic Jam;
  • Bulleat Song.

The title reflected a connection between the contemporary electronic production of the period and the musical aesthetics of the 1980s. The songs combined synthesisers, pop-rock melodies, electronic drums and Luka’s characteristic high-pitched vocals.

The album did not become as major a commercial event as So I Begin, but it was important in shaping his independent songwriting style. 80:08 presented Gilles Luka not merely as the voice of a dance project, but as a musician capable of constructing a complete musical concept of his own.

The creation of Ocean Drive

A new chapter began in 2008, when the project Ocean Drive was formed around producers Nicolas Carel and Just Uman. Gilles Luka became one of its main songwriters and producers, as well as its male vocalist.

According to a widely circulated account, one of the project’s early recordings was posted online and attracted the attention of DJ Oriska. Her participation led to the signature Ocean Drive sound: Gilles Luka’s English-language male vocals combined with female phrases in French.

The project’s name referred to Ocean Drive in Miami’s South Beach district. Musically, the group brought together house, electro-pop, radio-friendly dance music and bilingual choruses.

Some People and the success of Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive’s first major hit was Some People (Ton désir), recorded with DJ Oriska. It was released at a time when French radio stations were actively supporting the combination of electro-house and pop vocals.

Some People reached number eight on the French chart. The following single, Without You (Perdue sans toi), climbed to number four, becoming one of the group’s most successful songs. Because (Connecte-toi) reached number 11. The tracks also appeared on the Belgian and Swiss charts.

In 2009, Ocean Drive released the album With the Sunshine. It debuted at number 23 on the French albums chart and remained in the ranking for several months.

The album included:

  • Some People (Ton désir);
  • Without You (Perdue sans toi);
  • Because (Connecte-toi);
  • With the Sunshine (Tellement loin);
  • Diggin It;
  • Your Man;
  • Watcha;
  • Stop Me Now;
  • Embrasse-moi.

Ocean Drive’s success made Gilles Luka’s voice recognisable to a new audience that might not have associated him with Galleon. While So I Begin was representative of the early French touch sound, Some People and Without You belonged to the more commercial electro-pop scene of the late 2000s.

The international version of Some People

Following the success of the French-language version, Ocean Drive prepared an international version of Some People featuring Norwegian model and singer of Iranian origin Aylar Lie.

In 2010, the project signed an agreement to promote its material in the British market. The English-language version of Some People became one of the first releases from this phase.

Despite changes to the line-up and format, Gilles Luka remained an important link within Ocean Drive. He contributed to the music, performed the male vocal parts and represented the group during concerts and television appearances.

Return to his solo career

At the height of Ocean Drive’s popularity, the musician once again became more active with his solo project. In 2009, he released the single On s’évite, which combined club-oriented production with French-language lyrics.

It was followed by:

  • Reviens;
  • Plus près (We Can Make It Right);
  • I Can Believe (Jusqu’au bout);
  • Ici ensemble;
  • Fan de toi.

This phase differed from 80:08 through its stronger focus on the French audience. Gilles Luka retained an electronic sound, but placed greater emphasis on personal lyrics, duets and radio-friendly choruses.

Duet with Nyusha

One of Luka’s best-known solo songs was Plus près (We Can Make It Right), recorded with Russian singer Nyusha.

According to the French musician, the artists met after a major concert event in Moscow. Nyusha became interested in his performance, which led to the idea of recording a track together. The song combines French and English, in keeping with the project’s international concept.

The composition became the theme song for the French television project Les Anges de la téléréalité on NRJ 12. Through its regular use in the programme, the song became one of Gilles Luka’s most recognisable solo works.

The album Ici ensemble

In July 2011, Gilles Luka released his second solo album, Ici ensemble. The digital version included 16 tracks with a total running time of approximately 53 minutes.

In addition to the previously released singles, the album featured:

  • Ouverture;
  • Ici ensemble featuring Smartzee;
  • Fan de toi;
  • Japan;
  • Je le ferais pour toi;
  • Et j’avance featuring Nâdiya;
  • Quand on le fait;
  • several club versions of the main songs.

Ici ensemble brought together two sides of Luka’s work. On the one hand, it offered electronic pop designed for radio and dancefloors. On the other, it included melodic songs in which the voice, piano and French-language lyrics played a more prominent role.

Music journalists noted the singer’s recognisable high register and his ability to work equally confidently in French and English.

The song I Can Believe was used in an Axe advertising campaign featuring basketball player Tony Parker and internet performer Keenan Cahill. This became another example of the musician’s work at the intersection of pop music, television and advertising.

Remix for Mylène Farmer

In 2011, Gilles Luka and producer Romain Curtis created official remixes of Lonely Lisa by French singer Mylène Farmer.

The versions Curtis & Luka Radio Mix and Curtis & Luka Extended Mix were released. The work formed part of the official promotional campaign for the third single from the album Bleu Noir.

This collaboration showed that the French music industry regarded Gilles Luka not only as a performer of his own hits, but also as an electronic producer capable of adapting material by a major pop artist for a club audience.

Gilles Luka’s music on television

A significant part of the musician’s career is connected with television. In addition to the theme for Les Anges de la téléréalité, he created music for entertainment programmes, television idents and scripted productions.

His work includes compositions for projects associated with NRJ 12, France Télévisions and Canal+, as well as the theme music for the French programme Ce soir avec Arthur. Luka also wrote music for television stories including L’été où tout a basculé and other formats.

This type of work requires a different compositional structure from a conventional pop single. A television theme must be instantly recognisable, contain a striking musical motif and remain effective even in a very short version. Luka’s ability to write memorable choruses and instrumental hooks was well suited to these demands.

Revolution and the later Ocean Drive period

In 2012, Ocean Drive returned with the song Whatever (Encore et encore). It was followed by Revolution, selected as the main theme for the French season Star Academy Revolution on NRJ 12.

Revolution replaced Bob Sinclar’s Love Generation, which had been associated with previous seasons of the television show. For Ocean Drive, this confirmed the project’s status as a group capable of creating music not only for clubs, but also for mainstream television.

In 2013, the group released S.O.S. and Ocean Drive Avenue, recorded for the fifth season of Les Anges. The project’s activity gradually declined afterwards, while its members focused on their own directions.

The Colorblast project

In the late 2010s, Gilles Luka launched a new electronic project called Colorblast. Once again, he worked as composer and producer, although he did not always take the role of lead vocalist.

The Colorblast concept is built around a combination of pop, funk, electronic production and melodies inspired by different eras of the international dance scene. The name itself can be interpreted as a “blast of colour” — a mixture of genres and emotional shades.

Among the project’s first notable releases were:

  • Gorgeous;
  • There She Goes;
  • Baby;
  • Let Me In Closer;
  • Killer;
  • Message in a Bottle.

While working on Baby, Gilles Luka collaborated with singer Alex Ran. The project was created remotely in 2020, when the musicians were in different countries. On this release, Luka focused on writing the melody and producing the female vocals.

Message in a Bottle

One of Colorblast’s biggest successes was an electronic version of The Police song Message in a Bottle, released in 2022.

Luka reworked the classic rock song into a contemporary dance track while retaining its recognisable vocal melody and basic harmonic structure. The release received a series of remixes and became Colorblast’s most in-demand recording on digital platforms.

By the end of 2025, the project’s team reported more than 15 million streams for Message in a Bottle. The same figure was mentioned during Gilles Luka’s interview with the French radio station Voltage in January 2026.

The track’s success effectively opened another independent chapter in the musician’s career. Two decades after So I Begin and more than ten years after Some People, he once again achieved a notable international result in electronic music.

New Colorblast releases

In 2025, Colorblast released the single We Figured It Out. At the end of the same year, Urgent appeared, recorded with DJ and producer Warren Williams. It is an electronic version of the Foreigner song of the same name, written by Mick Jones.

Urgent was released on 28 November 2025 through Broddway Publishing, with distribution by Virgin Music France.

In January 2026, Gilles Luka told Voltage that Colorblast was his main current project. The musician continues to combine international dance production with melodies that refer back to pop and rock classics.

Creative work in 2023–2026

Alongside Colorblast, Luka continues to collaborate with other producers. In 2023, Nash La Musica released the song Waiting featuring him. In 2024–2025, the songs Like I Mean It, Nobody and Chaos appeared, crediting him as a performer, composer or featured vocalist.

In 2026, digital platforms also received new editions and versions of Gilles Luka’s work, including:

  • My Heart Will Go On;
  • We Can Make It Right;
  • We Can Make It Right in a remix by MÃRDØ.

These releases show that the musician continues to work both with new material and with his catalogue from the 2010s.

Gilles Luka’s musical style

Gilles Luka’s work cannot be limited to a single genre. Over the years, he has worked with French pop, French house, electro-house, dance-pop, EDM and music for television.

Several characteristic elements recur throughout his work:

  • a high and easily recognisable male voice;
  • a strong melodic line;
  • a combination of English and French;
  • pop song structure within a club arrangement;
  • synthesiser motifs inspired by 1980s music;
  • choruses designed to be remembered quickly;
  • a combination of electronic production with piano and live instruments.

In Galleon, his voice created a contrast with the dense French house production. In Ocean Drive, it became part of a bilingual dialogue between male English-language vocals and female French-language parts. In his solo work, personal lyrics came to the forefront, while Colorblast presents Luka primarily as a contemporary electronic producer.

Personal life

Gilles Luka is married to French interior designer and television presenter Emmanuelle Rivassoux, known for the programmes Maison à vendre and Mieux chez soi.

They met on 7 February 1999 in southern France. Exactly seven years later, on 7 February 2006, the couple officially married. They have confirmed this story on multiple occasions in their own publications and interviews.

The musician also takes part in animal welfare initiatives and publicly supports the organisation Sauve ton bourbon et Cie. This activity is regularly mentioned on his official pages.

Gilles Luka’s significance to French electronic music

Gilles Luka belongs to the group of artists whose influence cannot be measured solely by the number of solo hits they have released. His career demonstrates how one musician can work simultaneously in several professional roles: performer, songwriter, studio producer, arranger and television composer.

With Galleon, he became the voice of one of the recognisable European house hits of the early 2000s. With Ocean Drive, he contributed to the popular French electro-pop sound of the late 2000s. In his solo career, he combined club music with French-language lyrics, while Colorblast adapted his approach to the streaming era.

His creative biography also demonstrates an unusual degree of longevity within the rapidly changing dance genre. More than twenty years separate the successes of So I Begin, Some People and Message in a Bottle, yet all three tracks are built around the same core strength of their creator: the ability to write a simple and emotionally recognisable melody.
