Philipp Bedrosovich Kirkorov is a Russian estrada and pop singer, producer, actor and songwriter. He was born on 30 April 1967 in Varna, Bulgaria. Since the late 1980s, his career has gone through several distinctly different stages — from traditional estrada and television festivals of the late Soviet period to large-scale concert productions, digital-era pop music and collaborations with artists of younger generations. Kirkorov is a People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, a recipient of the Order of Honour and a multiple winner of Russian and international music awards.
His repertoire includes «Атлантида», «Ты, ты, ты», «Зайка моя», «Единственная моя», «Дива», «Ой, мама, шика дам!», «Я за тебя умру», «Жестокая любовь», «Снег», «Просто подари», «Цвет настроения синий» and dozens of other songs. In addition to his own stage career, Kirkorov has worked for many years as a producer and composer, including on projects for the Eurovision Song Contest.
Family and childhood
Philipp Kirkorov was born into a musical family. His father, Bedros Kirkorov, was a singer of Armenian descent who built a career in Bulgaria and the Soviet Union. His mother, Victoria Markovna Likhacheva, worked as a concert presenter and spoken-word performer. From early childhood, Philipp often spent time backstage during his parents’ tours and became familiar with professional concert life from the inside.
When he was seven, the family moved to Moscow. Kirkorov studied music, learned piano and guitar, and took part in school theatre productions and competitions. After finishing school, he decided to pursue professional stage training.
Gnessin School and first performances
In 1984, Kirkorov entered the Gnessin State Musical College, studying in the “musical theatre actor” department. His vocal teacher was Margarita Landa. He graduated with honours in 1988.
His television debut came while he was still studying. In November 1985, Kirkorov appeared on the programme «Шире круг!», where he performed the song «Алёша» in Bulgarian.
In 1987, he was invited to the Leningrad Music Hall under Ilya Rakhlin. As part of the company, the young artist took part in international tours, including performances in Germany and Czechoslovakia. This work gave him his first experience on a major professional stage before the beginning of his solo career.
Alla Pugacheva and «Рождественские встречи»
In the spring of 1988, Kirkorov performed in Ilya Reznik’s programme «Вернисаж». It was there that he first met Alla Pugacheva. A few months later, she invited the young singer to the first «Рождественские встречи» and to the company of her own Song Theatre.
Working alongside Pugacheva became an important professional stage, but Kirkorov’s own early repertoire was shaped to a large extent by another author — Leonid Derbenyov. His lyrics were used for «Ты, ты, ты», «Небо и земля», «Атлантида», «Днём и ночью» and other songs with which the singer began his independent career in the early 1990s.
In 1990, one of his first music videos, «Кармен», was filmed, while at the international competition «Шлягер-90» in Leningrad, Kirkorov won the Grand Prix for «Небо и земля». That same year, his first solo record, «Филипп», was released.
«Ты, ты, ты», «Атлантида» and the first solo programmes
In 1991, the album «Ты, ты, ты» was released. The songs of this period firmly established Kirkorov’s early image as a romantic estrada singer with a melodic repertoire and a pronounced theatrical performance style.
One of his best-known early songs was «Атлантида». In the early 1990s, Kirkorov presented his own concert programmes «Небо и земля» and «Атлантида», and began solo international tours in Germany, Israel, the United States and Canada.
In 1992, he received second prize at the international «Golden Orpheus» competition in Bulgaria and first prize at the Interfest competition in Macedonia. Therefore, the frequently repeated claim that Kirkorov “won the Golden Orpheus” requires clarification: the official biography of the Gnessin School specifically lists a second prize.
1990s estrada
In the mid-1990s, Kirkorov’s discography expanded rapidly. The albums «Я не Рафаэль» and «Примадонна» were followed by «Скажи солнцу: „Да!“». Songs from this period included «Зайка моя», «Мне мама тихо говорила», «Не твоя вина» and other compositions.
Unlike many artists for whom a concert primarily remained a performance of songs, Kirkorov placed strong emphasis on production from the beginning of his solo career: costumes, ballet, scenery, changes of stage image and the dramatic structure of the programme. His first major shows were already constructed as independent estrada spectacles.
This approach is connected with one of the most consistent features of his career: the musical material changed regularly, but large-scale visual presentation remained a permanent part of the project.
Eurovision 1995
Kirkorov represented Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1995. The competition was held in Dublin. He performed «Колыбельная для вулкана» (Kolybelnaya Dlya Vulkana) and finished in 17th place with 17 points.
Kirkorov’s own performance was not successful in terms of the result, but Eurovision later became much more important in his career as a songwriter and producer.
«С любовью к Единственной» and «Ой, мама, шика дам!»
By the end of the 1990s, Kirkorov’s sound and visual image had become noticeably more eclectic.
In 1998, the album projects «С любовью к Единственной» and «Ой, мама, шика дам!» were released. The latter consists of 16 tracks and combines traditional estrada with dance-pop, Eastern influences and international repertoire.
The songs «Дива», «Ой, мама, шика дам!», «Единственная моя» and other recordings from the end of the decade belong to the most recognisable part of his 1990s repertoire.
During the same period, Kirkorov also received international professional recognition. According to TASS, he won the World Music Awards five times as the best-selling Russian artist — in 1996, 1999, 2004, 2005 and 2008.
«ЧелоФилия» and the music of the 2000s
In 2000, «ЧелоФилия» was released — a 17-track album in which Kirkorov’s traditional estrada foundation coexisted with a more contemporary electronic pop production style for the beginning of the new decade. The album included «Огонь и вода», «Шальной ветер», «Настроения нет», «Танго» and other songs.
The following period brought «Влюблённый и безумно одинокий», «Жестокая любовь», «Незнакомка» and For You.... It was during the 2000s that enduring concert numbers such as «Я за тебя умру», «Жестокая любовь», «Я эту жизнь тебе отдам» and «Полетели» appeared. These songs remained in his concert repertoire far longer than their original album cycles.
The musical Chicago
A separate major project was the Russian production of the Broadway musical Chicago.
In 2002, Philip Kirkorov Production acquired the rights to stage the Russian version. Kirkorov served as general producer and played lawyer Billy Flynn — the central male role. The production ran at the Moscow Estrada Theatre in 2002–2003. Kirkorov later returned to the role in a new Russian staging of the musical.
His work on Chicago is important to his biography not only as acting experience: the project continued the approach in which Kirkorov treated the pop concert and musical theatre as closely related forms of stage art.
Kirkorov and Eurovision as a producer
After his own participation, Kirkorov returned to Eurovision as a songwriter, consultant and producer.
In 2007, he wrote the music for Work Your Magic by Dmitry Koldun. The Belarusian representative finished in sixth place — the country’s best result at the time.
In 2008, Kirkorov worked with Ani Lorak, who represented Ukraine with Shady Lady. She finished in second place.
He later became part of the team behind Sergey Lazarev. With You Are the Only One, Lazarev finished third in 2016 and won the televote in the final. Kirkorov also took part in the preparation of his 2019 Eurovision project.
Other Eurovision-related projects associated with Kirkorov include those of Angelica Agurbash, the Tolmachevy Sisters and Natalia Gordienko. Thus, after his own 1995 appearance, Eurovision became a separate and long-running area of his production work.
«ДРУGOY» and a new concert model
In 2011, the major music project «ДРУGOY» appeared. This period includes «Снег», «Просто подари» and other songs that became firmly established in Kirkorov’s concert catalogue.
An even larger step in stage direction followed in the mid-2010s.
The show «Я» was directed by Franco Dragone, who worked for many years with Cirque du Soleil and created the production A New Day... for Celine Dion. Kirkorov and Dragone conceived the programme not as a conventional collection of concert numbers, but as a unified visual spectacle.
The project became the most direct expression of Kirkorov’s approach to the concert stage: the vocal repertoire was integrated into an elaborate production featuring scenery, video, choreography and numerous costume changes.
«Цвет настроения синий» and a new audience
In 2018, another noticeable shift occurred in Kirkorov’s career. On 14 March, he released the single «Цвет настроения синий».
The song and music video deliberately moved away from his familiar image as a grand estrada performer toward self-irony, internet culture and collaboration with younger media personalities.
This direction continued with «Цвет настроения чёрный» — a song by Egor Kreed featuring Philipp Kirkorov, released on 10 September 2018. This distinction is important: digital catalogues list Egor Kreed as the primary artist of the release and Kirkorov as the featured artist.
During the same period, Ibiza with Nikolay Baskov appeared, while the concert concept was developed further in the show #ЦВЕТНАСТРОЕНИЯ. A recording of the 2018 Moscow performance was later released as a 41-track live album.
This period demonstrated Kirkorov’s ability to change the way he communicated with the audience without abandoning his own estrada history: older ballads continued to coexist in set lists alongside ironic contemporary pop releases.
Collaborations and digital pop music
In the following years, collaborations with artists of younger generations became a regular part of his discography.
In 2020, DAVA released «РОЛЕКС» featuring Kirkorov. Digital platforms classified the single not as traditional estrada but as hip-hop/rap, illustrating the stylistic freedom of the artist’s later period.
Later collaborations included recordings with ANNA ASTI, Lyusya Chebotina and other representatives of the contemporary Russian-language pop scene. At the same time, digital services show songs from very different periods among the most in-demand parts of Kirkorov’s catalogue: from «Жестокая любовь» and «Снег» to «Хобби» and «Цвет настроения чёрный».
In 2026, the album release UNO appeared — 17 tracks with a total running time of more than an hour. Songs and videos associated with the project include «Чёрная пантера», «Везувий» and «Одинокая нежная».
Thus, Kirkorov’s later discography does not exist separately from his earlier work: new singles and collaborations regularly appear in concerts and digital catalogues alongside songs recorded decades earlier.
Musical style
The foundation of Kirkorov’s work is estrada and pop music, although his discography is stylistically broader than any single definition.
His early material was built mainly around large vocal melodies and the classic structure of the estrada song. In the 1990s, this was supplemented by dance-pop, ethnic and Mediterranean influences, Russian-language versions of international songs and a stronger emphasis on stage production. «ЧелоФилия» and subsequent albums expanded the electronic component, while the 2010s and 2020s introduced elements of contemporary dance-pop, hip-hop and internet pop culture.
Kirkorov is, above all, an interpreter and show artist, rather than the author of his entire repertoire. His songs were written by Leonid Derbenyov, Ilya Reznik and many other composers and lyricists. Kirkorov himself has also worked as a composer — this side of his activity became most visible in his Eurovision projects.
Stage style
To understand Kirkorov’s career, the concert component is no less important than the studio discography.
As early as the beginning of the 1990s, he built his programmes around ballet, costumes and scenery. The scale of the productions later increased: Chicago placed him directly within musical theatre, while his collaboration with Franco Dragone on the show «Я» fully established the principle of the concert as a large-scale visual spectacle.
For this reason, Kirkorov’s numerous stage costumes and visual eccentricity are not a separate addition to the music but a consistent part of his professional method.
Personal life
The best-known period of Kirkorov’s personal life is connected with Alla Pugacheva. They were married from 1994 to 2005. Their relationship was also part of 1990s popular culture and included joint concerts and television appearances.
Kirkorov has two children: a daughter, Alla-Victoria, born in 2011, and a son, Martin, born in 2012.
Awards and professional recognition
In 2008, Philipp Kirkorov was awarded the title of People’s Artist of the Russian Federation. In 2017, he received the Order of Honour. In 2018, he was awarded the title of People’s Artist of Moldova.
He has received the World Music Awards five times as a Russian performer with strong sales figures, and has repeatedly won the Golden Gramophone, Muz-TV Awards, Ovation Awards and other music honours.
For an encyclopedic biography, however, the total number of trophies — which is often exaggerated in promotional materials — is less important than the length of his professional career: Kirkorov has remained part of mainstream pop culture since the second half of the 1980s, repeatedly changing his repertoire and the format of his stage project.

Philipp Kirkorov’s career makes it possible to trace several eras of Russian-language mainstream music. He began within the system of late-Soviet television estrada, became one of the most prominent solo performers of the 1990s, expanded his activities in the 2000s through musical theatre and production, and in the 2010s adapted his stage image to digital pop culture and the collaboration-driven model of releasing music.
Despite noticeable changes in repertoire, one element of the project has remained constant: the treatment of the concert as a fully staged show. It is precisely the combination of large-scale estrada songs, visual theatricality, decades of concert experience and the ability to work with musicians of different generations that defines Kirkorov’s place in the history of the Russian pop scene.
