DJ Boyko is the stage name of Russian DJ, electronic musician, producer and songwriter Sergey Boyko, born on November 23, 1975. His professional career began in 1992. The main stages of his creative work are associated with the duo R-Tem & DJ Boyko, the Sound Shocking project and the independent FLAVO label.
Early career
Sergey Boyko became involved in music while still at school, where he organised discos. Together with a friend, he also opened a small recording studio and learned to use Cubase, one of the principal electronic music production programs of that period.
Boyko began working professionally as a DJ in the early 1990s. For some time, he performed at a nightclub in Volgodonsk, Rostov Region. His later activities were connected with the club scene of southern Russia, studio production and the organisation of his own music projects. The artist’s official biography identifies 1992 as the beginning of his DJ career.
During the 1990s, Boyko gradually moved from working with existing recordings to producing his own music. His early compositions were created in home and club studios, with house becoming his main direction, ranging from progressive forms to a harder club sound.
R-Tem & DJ Boyko
In the early 2000s, Sergey Boyko began collaborating with Rostov-based musician and producer Artyom Kharchenko, who performed under the name R-Tem. Their joint project was called R-Tem & DJ Boyko.
In 2003, the duo released the album The Album One. It featured original compositions combining progressive house, breakbeat and electronic club music. The project’s notable works included the track Scared, as well as several vinyl singles and remixes.
R-Tem and DJ Boyko produced remixes of Yana Kay’s Tears in the Rain and the song Imagine by the Russian project Koala. In 2004, British label Cuba Recordings released the remix and dub version of Imagine created by R-Tem and DJ Boyko.
Koala’s original composition was connected with the music program of the Kazantip Republic’s 2004 season and was promoted as the festival anthem. It is therefore more accurate to state that Boyko and R-Tem produced official remixes of the anthem rather than wrote the original song.
After ending his collaboration with R-Tem, Sergey Boyko focused on a new project that combined electronic club music with Russian-language vocals and live instruments.
Formation of Sound Shocking
The Sound Shocking project was formed in the summer of 2004. Its initial development involved Sergey Boyko, vocalist Ivan Avakov, known as Masta, and musician Yevgeny Khramkov, also known as DJ Hacker. Boyko served as the project’s producer and was responsible for the electronic component of the material.
The first notable Sound Shocking composition was Z-Music. Created in the summer of 2004, the track was dedicated to the Kazantip festival. In early 2005, it was signed by British label Cuba Recordings, with the official vinyl release following later that year. The release included several versions of the track, including a vocal version and Boyko’s Kazantip Mix.
Z-Music was followed by the single Doom, released on the British label Police Records. These recordings represented the harder side of Sound Shocking, aimed at club sets and the mid-2000s vinyl market.
The album «Глубоко»
In 2005, DJ Boyko and Sound Shocking released the album «Глубоко». It became the project’s central work, combining Russian-language songs with instrumental club compositions.
The title track «Глубоко» was built around male vocals, a straight house rhythm and a repeating synthesiser theme. Sergey Boyko, Ivan Avakov and Yevgeny Khramkov are credited as the writers of the music and lyrics. The track was later reissued several times and received new versions and remixes.
The Sound Shocking catalogue also includes:

Unlike a conventional DJ project, Sound Shocking also developed as a live act. At different stages, its performances included vocals, guitar, keyboards, drums and a DJ section. Sergey Boyko viewed the project as a live form of electronic music rather than merely a studio alias.
Russian-language electronic music
One of the distinguishing features of DJ Boyko and Sound Shocking was their consistent use of the Russian language in club music. During the first half of the 2000s, a significant part of the Russian electronic scene was focused on instrumental compositions or English-language vocals. Boyko, by contrast, released Russian-language songs in the house and electro house formats.
This approach distinguished «Глубоко», «Трава», «Я должен танцевать», «Заводи» and other works from the majority of Russian club releases of that period. In these compositions, the vocals were not merely an addition to a DJ version but the foundation of the song itself.
The material was created simultaneously for club performance, radio and a live concert program. In Sound Shocking’s arrangements, electronic rhythms were combined with guitar parts, keyboards and live drums.
The FLAVO label
Sergey Boyko founded the independent music label FLAVO, through which he released his own projects and the work of other Russian artists. A significant part of the DJ Boyko and Sound Shocking catalogues, as well as releases by related performers, appeared through FLAVO.
The label primarily specialised in Russian and Russian-language dance music. In addition to releasing recordings, its team handled promotion, distributed material among DJs and prepared artists for live performances.
Boyko described FLAVO more as a promotional label than as a company focused exclusively on selling recordings. Its purpose was to distribute music and support artists working within the Russian electronic music scene.
Remixes
DJ Boyko produced official remixes for Russian and international artists. His catalogue includes:

DJ Boyko’s official catalogue also lists a remix of Alla Pugacheva’s song «Не сгорю», produced together with R-Tem.
Boyko’s remixes retained the principal vocal parts of the originals while restructuring them for club use. The tempo, rhythmic foundation, introductions and climactic sections were altered.
Later work
After the most active period of Sound Shocking, Sergey Boyko continued releasing solo singles, remixes and DJ mixes. His later work covers house, deep house, tech house, melodic house and selected elements of melodic techno.
His later releases and projects include Shake It, Groove Bird, Meet on the Dance Floor, Party, updated versions of «Глубоко» and other recordings. Shake It was included on the compilation The Gallery: 18 Years, associated with London’s Ministry of Sound club.
In 2014, Boyko took part in the music program of the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi and released the track Olympiad. This period combined appearances at major public events with the continuation of his club activities.
Teaching
In addition to performing and studio production, Sergey Boyko teaches DJing and electronic music production. His programs cover the use of DJ equipment, set construction, mixing, music selection and the fundamentals of music production.
Educational work has become a separate area of his career. DJ Boyko conducts courses and masterclasses based on his experience of club performances, vinyl and digital releases, label management and the development of live music projects.
Musical style
DJ Boyko’s discography spans several periods of Russian club music. His work with R-Tem was primarily associated with progressive house and early-2000s electronic club music. Sound Shocking combined electro house, vocal house and elements of live performance. In his later sets, Boyko has explored deep house, melodic house, tech house and melodic techno.
His original compositions are characterised by a straight dance rhythm, a pronounced bassline and a song-based structure. In Russian-language works, the vocals usually occupy the central position, while the instrumental arrangement is built around the chorus and a repeating synthesiser motif.
This distinguishes his music from functional club tracks created exclusively for DJ mixing. A significant part of DJ Boyko’s catalogue was conceived as complete songs that could work in clubs, on radio and as part of a live concert program.
Place in Russian electronic music
DJ Boyko’s main contribution is associated with the development of Russian-language dance music during the 2000s. He worked not only as a DJ but also as a studio producer, songwriter, leader of a live project and founder of an independent label.
R-Tem & DJ Boyko and Sound Shocking represent two different stages of his career. The first was focused on progressive house, vinyl releases and the international club market. The second concentrated on Russian-language vocal material and the combination of electronic music with live instruments.
DJ Boyko continues to perform, release music and teach. His catalogue includes original albums, club singles, remixes and Sound Shocking recordings created during different periods of the Russian electronic music scene.
