DARA

DARA is a Bulgarian singer, songwriter and one of the brightest figures on today’s Balkan pop scene. The artist’s real name is Darina Nikolaeva Yotova. She was born in Varna, a city on the Black Sea coast, and has been connected with music since childhood: according to SBS, DARA began with Bulgarian folklore at around the age of seven, later graduated from the National School of Arts and gradually shifted her focus toward a modern pop sound.

Her path into music was far from straightforward. In her youth, DARA was interested not only in singing, but also in dance, drawing and acting — which is why, from the very beginning, her stage presence felt like more than that of a vocalist: she emerged as a visual, physical and expressive performer. In an interview with the Bulgarian publication “Litsata na grada”, she recalled that before X Factor she had not studied pop singing professionally, and that the project helped her step outside her comfort zone and understand the genre in which she wanted to develop.

DARA gained wide recognition in 2015 after taking part in the Bulgarian version of X Factor. For the young artist, this was not merely a television debut, but the moment when her energy, personality and bold stage presence began to form a distinct brand. She quickly stood out among the contestants — not through academic restraint, but through vivid, almost explosive artistry, a natural command of the stage and an ability to connect instantly with the audience.

Her real commercial breakthrough came in 2016 with her debut single “K’vo ne chu”. Just three weeks after its release, the song topped the official chart of the most-played Bulgarian songs on radio and television, while the video had already attracted millions of views on video platforms. Bulgarian media later noted that the track remained at number one for 12 consecutive weeks and brought DARA a 359 Hip-Hop Awards prize as the debut artist of 2016.

DARA’s early hits defined her core creative formula: daring pop, club energy, R&B-inspired movement, a striking visual image and the ability to connect local Bulgarian identity with an international sound. After “K’vo ne chu”, she released “Rodena takava”, “Nedei”, “Vse na men”, “Ai Ai”, “Cold as Ice”, “Thunder”, “Call Me”, “Mr. Rover”, “Zaminavam” and other tracks that cemented her status as one of Bulgaria’s leading young pop artists. The official Eurovision website describes DARA as an artist with a powerful voice, a commanding stage presence and a free approach to mixing genres; it also notes that her songs and videos have generated more than 80 million combined streams and views.

One of DARA’s defining qualities is that her ambitions have never been limited to the national market. Her career shows clear international connections and production collaborations: among the names associated with her music are Chris Young, who has worked with Rod Stewart and Kylie Minogue, Jungleboi, known for his work with ZAYN and Rihanna, as well as Yoad Nevo and Monoir. This helps explain why her pop sound never feels confined to a purely local scene: DARA thinks of herself as a European artist, not only a Bulgarian one.

In 2022, DARA released the album “Родена такава” — a 13-track release on Virginia Records, where she consolidated her recognizable balance of dance-pop energy, the Bulgarian language, direct melodic writing and bold feminine charisma. In 2025, she followed it with “ADHDARA”, a more conceptual and daring project released through Virginia Records / DARA. On the artist’s official website, the album is described as a step toward a more complete international identity and sound.

The story of “Mr. Rover” deserves special attention. The track became one of the clearest examples of how DARA’s material can travel beyond the Bulgarian scene: Eurovoix noted that South Korean artist KAI of EXO released “Rover” as a version based on DARA’s original. For a Balkan pop artist, this is an important sign of export potential: her songs can exist not only as local radio hits, but also as material suitable for the global pop industry.

Alongside her solo career, DARA has been active on television. Since 2021, she has served as a coach on The Voice of Bulgaria, with her contestants winning the show in 2022 and 2024. In 2026, it was reported that DARA would return to the coach’s chair for a fifth time, underlining her authority not only as a performer, but also as someone capable of hearing, developing and guiding young artists.

Her television career extends beyond music competitions. DARA took part in the Bulgarian version of Your Face Sounds Familiar — “Kato dve kapki voda” — and in 2024 became a finalist on Dancing Stars Bulgaria, finishing in second place. These projects are important for understanding her artistic type: DARA is not a static vocalist, but a stage performer for whom dance, image, acting presence and physical energy are all part of the musical statement.

The culmination of her international chapter came with DARA’s victory at the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 with the song “Bangaranga”. Bulgaria returned to the contest after a break, while DARA was first selected as the country’s representative after performing “Thunder”, winning both the public vote and the jury vote unanimously. In the final stage of the selection, she presented three songs — “This Is Me”, “Curse” and “Bangaranga”; it was “Bangaranga” that became her official contest entry.

The victory in Vienna was historic: DARA brought Bulgaria its first-ever Eurovision win. The contest’s official website reported that “Bangaranga” scored 516 points, winning both the jury vote and the public vote: 204 points from the juries and 312 from the audience. It was the first time in almost a decade that the same entrant had won both parts of the voting, while the 173-point margin became the largest winning margin in the history of the contest.

“Bangaranga” did more than expand DARA’s audience — it changed her status. Before Eurovision, she was one of the leading pop stars in Bulgaria and the Balkans; after the victory, she became an artist through whom Bulgarian pop music gained a new symbol of international visibility. Associated Press reported that, upon her return to Sofia, DARA was welcomed by hundreds of fans waving Bulgarian flags, while the singer herself described the award as the beginning of her future international career and spoke about the importance of supporting Bulgarian artists.

From an artistic point of view, DARA is compelling because she does not try to choose between local identity and global appeal. Her music contains Balkan directness, club-oriented physicality, pop melody, elements of R&B and synthpop, yet all of it is delivered through contemporary visual culture: music videos, choreography, fashion and vivid stage dramaturgy. She knows how to sound accessible without becoming faceless; commercial, but never sterile.

Today, DARA is no longer simply a singer with a string of major hits. She is a new-generation artist who grew from a television talent-show contestant into an independent pop brand, became a mentor to other musicians, released conceptual albums, entered the international market and delivered a historic Eurovision victory for Bulgaria. Her career shows how a regional scene can become part of the global music conversation when an artist has not only vocal ability, but also character, discipline, visual thinking and the courage to keep changing scale.
