CamelPhat are a British electronic music duo from Liverpool consisting of DJs and producers Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scala. They have released music under the CamelPhat name since 2010, although the two musicians had already worked together before then. Their productions combine house, tech house, deep house, melodic house & techno and progressive house, while their album material also incorporates alternative electronic music, trip-hop and pop.
CamelPhat gained international recognition in 2017 with their collaboration with Elderbrook, «Cola». This was followed by «Panic Room», «Breathe», «Be Someone», «Rabbit Hole», «For a Feeling», «Hypercolour» and other notable releases. The duo’s discography includes the albums Dark Matter and Spiritual Milk, while club performances and Ibiza residencies have become an important part of their live career.
Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scala before CamelPhat
Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scala met in Liverpool in the mid-2000s. One of the places where their paths crossed was the electronic music store 3 Beat Records. Both were already working as DJs and were involved in the city’s club scene.
By that time, Mike Di Scala already had substantial studio experience. He had been involved with Rezonance Q and Ultrabeat and released music under the name Re-Con. Ultrabeat had already achieved widespread recognition in the UK in the early 2000s.
Dave Whelan was developing his own Liverpool club night series, Jubilee. Together, the musicians were residents at Society and gradually began recording their own material.
Before CamelPhat, Whelan and Di Scala worked under several names, including Pawn Shop, Whelan & Di Scala, Wheels & Disco and Shake n' Jack. As members of The Chosen Few, they also collaborated with Les Calvert.
Under the Pawn Shop name, they released «Shot Away» in 2006, using material from The Rolling Stones’ «Gimme Shelter». The track entered the UK Singles Chart.
The emergence of CamelPhat
The name CamelPhat appeared in 2010.
At first, the musicians deliberately avoided linking the new project to their previous work. They concealed their faces behind wrestling masks and even created the impression that CamelPhat came from Italy.
During its first few years, the project existed primarily within the club scene. The duo released singles and EPs on various labels, gradually moving away from straightforward house toward a deeper sound built around powerful bass, longer arrangements and atmospheric synthesizers.
«The Act», «Paradigm» and «Constellations»
By the mid-2010s, CamelPhat tracks were appearing increasingly often in the sets of established DJs.
In 2014, they released «The Act». This was followed in 2015 by «Paradigm», featuring vocals by A*M*E, and «Constellations».
The duo released music on Suara and other prominent dance labels and, by 2017, were already well known within the European club scene.
«Cola»
In June 2017, CamelPhat and British singer and producer Elderbrook released «Cola».
The minimalist house track, featuring vocals by Alexander Kotz, reached far beyond the club audience. The song peaked at No. 18 on the UK Singles Chart and spent 30 weeks on the British chart.
In the United States, «Cola» topped the dance chart.
At the 60th Grammy Awards, the track was nominated for Best Dance Recording. The award went to LCD Soundsystem for «Tonite».
Despite its commercial success, «Cola» retained a distinctly club-oriented structure: a repeating bassline, restrained beat and vocal motif that develops gradually without a conventional large pop chorus.
«Panic Room», «Breathe» and new vocal collaborations
In 2018, CamelPhat released a collaboration with singer Au/Ra, «Panic Room». The track reached No. 30 on the UK chart.
That same year brought «Breathe», recorded with producer Cristoph and vocalist Jem Cooke. The track entered the UK Top 40.
In 2019, CamelPhat released «Be Someone» with Jake Bugg, followed later by «Rabbit Hole» with Jem Cooke.
Vocal tracks came to occupy a prominent place in the CamelPhat catalogue, often combining extended club arrangements with a fully developed song structure.
Dark Matter
On October 30, 2020, CamelPhat released their debut studio album, Dark Matter.
The standard edition contained 21 tracks, combining previously released singles with new material.
Guest vocalists and producers included Elderbrook, Au/Ra, Jem Cooke, Jake Bugg, Noel Gallagher, Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis, Maverick Sabre, RHODES, Lowes, Skream, Eli & Fur and ARTBAT.
On «Hypercolour», featuring Yannis Philippakis, CamelPhat’s electronic production intersects with alternative rock. Noel Gallagher appears on «Not Over Yet», while «For a Feeling», with ARTBAT and RHODES, represents the more melodic and atmospheric side of the album.
Dark Matter reached No. 23 on the UK Albums Chart and topped the UK Dance Albums Chart.
Releases in 2021–2022
After Dark Matter, CamelPhat continued releasing standalone club tracks.
In 2021, they released «Critical» with Green Velvet and «The Future» with Rebūke.
In 2022 came «Silenced» with Jem Cooke, «Believe» with Mathame and «The Sign», a collaboration with Anyma.
At the same time, their live presence in Ibiza continued to grow, with CamelPhat regularly appearing at some of the island’s largest clubs.
When Stars Align
In 2022, Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scala launched their own label, When Stars Align.
Its first release was «Magic Me» by Liverpool producer ELDON, for which CamelPhat also produced a remix.
The When Stars Align catalogue focuses primarily on melodic house & techno, indie dance and related forms of contemporary club music.
Spiritual Milk
CamelPhat released their second studio album, Spiritual Milk, in September 2023.
The album consists of 16 tracks and features contributions from SOHN, RHODES, Anyma, Ali Love, Mathame, Kölsch, Shimza, Julia Church, Desire, London Grammar and Jake Bugg.
Key tracks include «Higher» with London Grammar, «The Sign» with Anyma, «Colossus» with Kölsch and «Many Times» with Mathame.
Compared with the debut album, Spiritual Milk contains more atmospheric electronic material, slower compositions and tracks designed for listening beyond the club environment.
Spiritual Milk reached No. 3 on the UK Dance Albums Chart and was released through When Stars Align.
Ibiza and club residencies
By the beginning of the 2020s, CamelPhat had become regular fixtures of the Ibiza club scene.
After performances and their own events at Ushuaïa, the duo moved their residency to Pacha Ibiza in 2023.
CamelPhat’s sets combine house, melodic techno, progressive house and deeper forms of club-oriented electronic music.
Across different seasons, they have been joined by Pete Tong, ARTBAT, Mind Against, Kölsch, Hot Since 82, Miss Monique, Agents Of Time, Âme and other artists.
The Pacha residency continued in subsequent years.
Releases from 2024 to 2026
Following Spiritual Milk, CamelPhat focused on standalone singles, remixes, club releases and the continued development of When Stars Align.
In 2024, the duo released new versions of material from their second album as well as standalone tracks, including «Endlessly».
In 2025, they released «Needed You» with Vomee, «Sunshine», «Destino» with Zafrir and «The One» with Josh Gigante.
In 2026, CamelPhat released «Cycles» with Arodes, «So Good» with Josh Gigante and Kuuda, «Unique Moment» with Volkoder and other club tracks.
In September 2026, they released «Landlords Nightmare».
CamelPhat’s musical style
CamelPhat’s sound has evolved throughout the project’s history. Their early releases were dominated by house and tech house, while progressive house and melodic house & techno became increasingly prominent later on.
The duo’s production style is characterized by a pronounced bassline, relatively open space between elements of the arrangement and gradual track development. A melodic or vocal theme often remains almost unchanged while tension is built through additional details, rhythmic changes and layers of synthesizers.
A significant proportion of CamelPhat’s best-known work features guest vocalists, including Elderbrook, Jem Cooke, Au/Ra, Jake Bugg, Noel Gallagher, London Grammar, RHODES and others.
In their club versions, CamelPhat often use extended instrumental introductions and long-form development, while vocal singles tend to retain a more conventional song structure.

CamelPhat on the club scene
By the time «Cola» was released, Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scala had already spent many years working in electronic music and had released dozens of records under different names.
After 2017, club releases continued to sit alongside vocal singles and album material. Dark Matter combined house, R&B, alternative electronic music and collaborations with rock musicians, while Spiritual Milk moved more decisively toward melodic house & techno and atmospheric electronic production.
CamelPhat continue to release club music, develop When Stars Align and perform regularly in Ibiza and at major electronic music festivals.
